Sammy issues..

I can't seem to get the bait to work right, it will walk for a second then dig in or pop up, I've used a spook for years and thought it would be similar but I having troubles. I've used both a 5'6 heavy action pistol grip(my usual topwater rod) and my 6'6 med heavy casting rod and same issues both rods, 12 lb mono.

Am I overworking the bait? Should I try another rod? Is it similar to fishing a spook, working it with slack? Any unfo on how you fish em and what tackle used would be appreciated.

hey skeet, Sammy can be tough to walk at times, especially the smaller models... I've used 12-17# line doesn't make a difference... I use a 6-6 all star TWS... (med-light) I guess practice more... If i got any chop on the water, I usually throw a spook...

That's just a Sammy. It's one of those overrated offerings from LC (IMO). Nothing beats a Super Spook Jr as a walking bait. The LC Gunfish is a great splashing/ walking bait though!

Sounds like your overworking it.

Sammy is a great bait. You don't work it as hard a spook though. It's a really subtle topwater that walks well. I throw mine on 15lb Maxima with a 7'3" M rod.

I have some Sammy's and other banana shaped walking baits. They seem a bit more tricky to walk especially if your cadence isn't really rhythmic. Learned to walk a bait with the Spook Jr and find myself going to it most times.

I've found the problem I had with walking a Sammy is I could not have the boat moving at the same time. My boat had to be still in order for the bait to work properly......where with a spook...I could keep the boat moving and work it all the way back with no problems. But the minute I tried moving the boat with the Sammy......it would only work for 5 -7 feet then start jumping all over....

Strange.........but that's what I found was screwing up my retieves with a Sammy. I just couldn't get that thing to work all the way back to the boat while on the move.

Does anyone catch anything on the Sammies when they aren't walking? When their jumping, splashing diving down? About ready to sell them and buy more spooks.
