    South Fork New River

Anyone have and information on fishing this river? What species are in it and any tips would be appreciated. Going to visit daughter and SIL in Laurel Springs in a week and thinking of trying it out.

Haven’t fished it in a while. Make sure you throw a black finesse worm. Lots of smallmouth in it for sure.

Used to fish it often......the new river as a whole has really taken a hit over the last 8 years with the never ending floods that we get year around but especially in the spring. It has really destroyed most of the spawns over that time. What used to be a very easy triple digit fish day has come to the point that you're lucky to get 10 bites. I haven't fished it this year or last but it was absolutely horrible the past few times I fished it anywhere from the south fork to radford. SPlit shot rig with a 4 inch green pumpkin lizard or 4 inch finesse worm, ned rig, fluke will get you bites if you get around fish. Before it got so bad it was my most favorite place to fish on earth. Good luck.

Thanks KB. SIL is wanting to take up fishing and I only have to days to get him started and info like this will help a lot. I am putting together him a small tackle box and not wanting to put to much stuff in it that he will not need.
