I need help with flipping and pitching

I am getting decent with my side arm casting, I now realize I am better with a bait caster rig, but I can't figure out this flipping and pitching stuff. I have read all there is on the net on how to do it, but can't get the mechanics of it down. Are there any video's or sequence pictures to describe how to flip and pitch? I am more of a visual person, so if I can see what everyone is talking about then I will more likely be able to figure it out. Also how on earth do you get a 1/2 ounce or larger jig and pig, or other large lures to enter the water silently? I tried like crazy last evening to get my lures to enter the water silently with no luck. To me this is something that practicing on dry land can't help with. Am I wrong here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Getting someone to "show" you is alot easier than trying to reead about it. I attended a Bassmaster University a few years back and Denny Brauer was an instructor. I learned more from him in 15 min. than all the reading in books or on the net. The secret to silent entry is the low trajectory. If it is only a couple inches from the surface when it falls it is not going to make as much commotion as falling from higher.

Exactly!!! If you have a low trajectory and its only about 2" inches off the top of the water and can kind of thumb your spool and "drop" it in right where you want it with virtually hardly any ripple. Just takes practice but if you get your reel loosened up just right you can do it pretty easily.

this winter i did alot of practicing in the garage with a practice plug from BPS. i think practicing in the garage helps because if you pitch the plug out and it drops from a higher point on this hard surface, it will bounce. if you drop the plug from a low point the plug will almost lay down for you with no bounce. i also like ti practice in the garage because there are plenty of targets to pitch and flip to . after you start to get the hang of it, open the garage door halfway and practice pitching under it and move the door closer to the ground as you get better. it will help you learn to pitch under things like docks or branches.

I practice off my front porch, 2nd step up. More realistic in the boat to water ration.

First off, you need to make sure you're flipping and oitching with the right equipment. You'll be in a world of broken hearts trying to pitch and flip with a 6'0 fiberglass rod that was $5 from Wal mart. For flipping, you can't go wrong with a "flipping" rod. Hence the name.
But pitching is a whole different story. When you pitch, you need a rod with similar characteristics to a flipping stick, but slightly shorter (for better control and manuevering) and a softer tip. The softer tip allows the bait to "spring" just above the surface from the weight of the BAIT loading the rod, NOT your arm loading it. Many people try to "shoot" their bait by pulling it back and manually loading the rod tip and letting the bait shoot forward; in turn, backlashing. Just drop your bait from just above the waistline on a semi-taut line and let the rod tip do the actual "pitch" for you.
The absolute perfect pitching rod I've yet to come by is the Carrot Stix LTX 7'0 XHY.
Good luck to you and don't give up; it's very rewarding!

Re: I need help with flipping and pitching (bassman11)

Ive been off work for diasability and been really bored. I started pictching to a tupperware bowl about 8" in diameter. After getting my mechanics right and a good feel I could land the 3/16 jig from 25 -30 ft in the bowl. I soon realized that flat and low was the key. So I flipped the bolws over upside down and now try to come in low and hit the front of the bowls lightly. It really helps my accuracy if I really concentrate on on certain spot rather than the area. Good luck

Re: I need help with flipping and pitching (stumpy)

make sure you have a good rod and i have found that useing a longer rod help its easier to place the bait where you want ti and practice in your driveway i usuely practice about an hour a week besides fishing and i have gotten to where i use a coffee cup to flip into in the driveway

and if you are trying to flip around like tree then just set up something tall and you can practice to where you can turn your rod at the last minute and it will curve around the tree so you can hit a target behind it

The best tip I can give you is when the bait is released from your hand and swings down the faster you come up with the rod tip the lower to the water your lure will be.

Re: I need help with flipping and pitching (J_DUB)

Lot of good information. One more that I would add for flipping. Check out the Dee Thomas Bass Class Flipping video. He covers technique, rod, line, baits, boat positioning, seasonal approaches and anything else you can imagine related to flipping. The video was done in the mid 90's, but it is very good and I have done very well with his approach. It is available on DVD or VHS. Do a search on the title and you should find it.

I might have forgot to mention, but I think he invented the technique on the California Delta.

Re: I need help with flipping and pitching (J_DUB)

Bass Pro has a great video with KVD on flipping and pitching. Just keep your bait even with the reel and let it rip. Start off with a texas rig with about a 1/4 oz weight and remember to lift your rod tip slightly just before your bait hits the water. The big stuff,1/2 oz and up is most often used to punch through something or in deep water so noise is not much of a factor.. Myself , I just use a 3/16 oz (slow fall) or a 5/16 oz(fast fall, heavy cover) most of the time.

Re: I need help with flipping and pitching (red dog)

I havn't read all of the reply's, so I apologize if this has been mentioned.

hold the bait IN FRONT of the reel, not behind, this makes the cast A LOT easier to controll.

Hold the reel with the handles facing down and work the rod with your wrist. Let the rod do all of the work, don't try and "push" the cast.

every chance you get, get out in the yard and parctice flipping and pitching. Stand up on something like a milk crate, or the deck of your boat. Pick a target and stay with it until your constant and hitting your target. Start off with a heavy bait like a big jig, then work your way down to lighter baits..

    practice, practice, practice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to the Bass Pro Website and watch the Denny Brauer Flipping/Pitching video they have for FREE. It is pretty good and shows both techniques.

Re: I need help with flipping and pitching (swilliams)

I love to pitch, heres how ya do it. have 7 foot heavy action rod(a must) and have your rod in right hand and lure in left. LET THE ROD TAKE THE LURE OUT OF YOUR HAND. practice practice practice.
