    Spinning wheel stud

Went to get new tires for the trailer yesterday after one of my china bombs went BOOM. They couldnt get one lug nut off due to a spinning stud. So now Ive got to figure out how to get hub off with tire and brakes on. Im assuming I need to get the caliper off befor I can remove the hub but not sure. Never had to do this before.I cant just break the stud as it dosent come through the wheel enough.

Any suggestions? Its an 04 188 with single axle trailer
    Thanks in advance

    Option on.
Cut the end of the lugnut off exposing the stud. Cut a slot in the stud. Hold the stud with a screwdriver and remove the nut.
    Option two.
Cut the lugnut and stud down the middle as deep as you can without damaging the wheel. Drive a screwdriver or chisel into the lugnut splitting the nut in half.

Had a problem like that before with some real nice wheels. Grabbed the nut with vise grips. Then center punched the nut. Used a brand new drill bit and drilled straight into the stud and once the bit went deeper than the nut it came apart with no damage whatsoever.

Maybe try this brute force method

Im not sure Ive got the room inside the wheel to break it that way. The lug nuts sit pretty far inside and it needs a thin walled socket to get em on and off with an impact. The 4 way barely gets in there enough

Dang it. I thought that be a relatively easy way to do it. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube showing how to do it like the other guys above suggested.

You can, of course, remove the tire/wheel/hub assembly from the trailer if that somehow makes it easier to work on. (You may or may not need to disconnect the brake line to get more room to work) That would give you access to the back of the hub where you might be able to grab the stud with some vice grips to allow you to remove the nut. (Use an air ratchet on the nut) Alternatively, you could tack weld the stud from the rear of the hub or even drill it out from behind.

If you have DB35 calipers, just remove the two 7/16" studs that mount the caliper to the axle flange. You might have the older DB42 calipers. If so, there are 4 bolts/nuts that mount the bracket to the flange. The caliper is fastened to that bracket with a single bolt from the backside of the bracket but I don't think you can get the caliper off that bracket with the wheel on. (I might be wrong about that. I've only worked with the DB35 calipers.)

I havent had the time to get under it to see about removing the hub with the wheel on but think that is going to be the easiest way to go about it and not damage the wheel.

But I had an idea to drill through the outer end of the lug nut to get to the stud and get an easy out in the stud and hold the nut with a wrench and spin the stud while holding the nut.
I appreciate the words of wisdom 86. I just wanna go fishin!

Well I ended up drilling the stud out and getting the wheel off and my new goodyear on all be it with only 4 lugs for now.
I bought what I thought were the correct studs but the slotted part that sucks into the hub was much to big. I went to a trailer supply store and they didnt have any in the 7 buckets of random studs.
Guess I need to find who built this trailer for champion and see if I can find the correct studs. I do know they are 1/2" x 20 but I have no idea how to find the correct ones that will work with my hubs

2004 is either going to be MFI or SC. Neither is in business any longer. They used UFP axles, springs, hubs, brakes, etc. There should be a sticker on the inside of the frame near the tongue. Here's a shot of mine on my 07 trailer. SC was built in-house, Stratos Champion.

Could always tack weld it to the hub from the back side.

Sounds like the best way, junk the hub, if one went bad the rest may follow. And tack if that breaks loose, weld the bugger.

Surely, you have UFP hubs. I would start by measuring the stud that you removed. Also, most UFP hubs have a part number stamped on the back.

If you have 2" 1/2-20 studs. Thread length 1" Knurl: .25 length. 561 dia. Head dia .75
    Those aren't hard to find

Some UFP hubs used screw in studs rather than inserts

    Awesome
I will get under there and find the # on the hub and call UFP and most likely just replace both hubs and start fresh. I figure if 1 goes more may be soon to follow
    Thanks again everyone
