    Spinning Reels

Spinning reels, fairy wands, eggbeater, etc. Why is there no love for these reels in the Bass fishing world? In the salt they are used for Mahi Mahi, Swordfish, Wahoo, Tuna and Tarpon so they certainly can handle bigger fish. Is it the "cool" factor?

    Asking for a friend.

I love spinning reels and baitcasters equally. I don't get it either.

People use what they like to use. It really is that simple. I use them more than casting rigs.

I use them but much prefer bait casters. I'm loving BFS in place of spinning when ever possible.

I've used spinning reels and rods since I started fishing and really see no big disadvantage unless maybe frogging or punching...that is just my opinion though

For my preferred way of fishing bait casters just do the job better. I do love using my spinning reels when chasing smallies though. I guess I let the technique dictate what I use.

I used to hate using them because of the style of fishing. I've come around to chasing smallies with them.

The “cool factor” plays a big part for sure. But I also think it’s a regional/cultural thing too.

down south bass tends to be the primary sport fish and baitcasters are synonymous with bass fishing. Up north it’s more cold water species like trout and walleye where spinning reels are more practical. I grew up using spinning reels and didn’t use a baitcaster until early to mid 20s. Had no reason to.

I will say BFS might be fun, but it absolutely will never replace a spinning reel for me. BFS can’t allow a bait to fall near vertically on a cast and spinning reel drags are just far superior in terms of adjustments and smoothness. But if it’s fun, use it as that’s what fishing is about.

I've always fished with lighter baits so spinning just works better for me, 3/8 oz is heavy for me. Although I like casting rigs for top water and any crankbaits bigger than a #5 shad rap.

It comes down to the right tool for the application. Those who play the game of not using the right tool is the fool........ This is being played out quite well in the Elites, many of the Tournaments are being won/or placing high by using the right tool.

Conventional reels (Bait casters) Do everything better other than casting light line and baits. They have a better drag system. They don’t twist your line. No 90 degree bend coming off the reel.

Having said that. With the advent of braid, which has eliminated line twist the spinning reel is now a better alternative for those that have a hard time throwing a bait caster. East coast guys fish offshore with spinning reels. West coast not so much.

Comes down to how you fish. I rarely finesse fish so baitcaster an are better for the way I fish. Baitcaster an are better for power fishing.

They're hated because for a lot of folks when you pull it out of the locker it means your preferred power fishing game isn't working. Kinda like when you have to put ketchup on your steak, usually means you cooked it too long and now you're trying to salvage it (or so says one of my friends <cough> )

Conventional have a better drag???? NOPE>... not even close..... you can take a spinner and hang it from the ceiling and let if slowly fall on its own weight.........

Been throwing D-bait cranks and other flat balsa forever, never needed spinning. Guess I was a BFS creator lol.
