We need a little more specific's.

I use the lightest weight that will maintain bottom contact. That could be 1/16 for six inch worm on 1 oz for a 12 inch worm. You also need to factor in line size, depth and type of structure.

When fishing shallow cover ( laydowns, docks, etc.) I seem to find myself putting either a 3/16 or a 1/4 bullet weight on depending on the fall rate of the bait and how slow need to fish it... Much deeper than 12-15 feet, I will usually move up in weight some...I'm not that patient

so lets say you are fishing a 6"Lizard in 10 to 20 feet of water would you use a 1/4 ounce weight.

With no wind or very little then yes. If you have some wind then you would need to add more weight. Of course at 20 feet you might need a little more depending on the way you are fishing it. Sorry that's not a specific answer but so many variables make it hard to detemine sitting at a keyboard.

I like using the lightest weight I can but sometimes you just have to add more to keep in contact with the bait and bottom.

WHEN fishing that deep I always use a 1/2 weight.

i usually use a 3/8. Could you go wrong if you fished a 1/4 ounce weight all the time.

yeah...I think that you can't be married to one weight size... say you are using a bigger bait like a brushhog and you are fishing in 6 ft. of water... A lot of my creature bait bites occur on the fall...I might use a 1/8 oz. weight on it so it flutters more on the slower fall to the bottom... Also in deep water with a lot of wind, you definitely want something to get it to the bottom fast...

Heck, as a rule of thumb I start at 1/8 and work my way up if needed. It all depends on your application. Heavy weeds and grass warrant more weight, wind=more weight, etc.

I normal start at a 3/16 a standard but it depends on the water depth and what the fish want
Cheaper to keep a kid in tourney fishing than paying attorneys to keep them out of jail !!
