    Line for Carolina Rig

What size/type line are you using on your reel and what size/type for your leader? How long of a leader?

30-45# braid. fluorocarbon leader. Usually a longer leader in hydrilla and kissimmee grass up to 3'. around wood and brush piles I shorten up to around 18" to help prevent hangups.

right now i use 15lb stren and 12lb vanish as a leader.. i would like to use braid for sensativity but i dont which one to get bc if you backlash them it will knot up and a pain to get out.

which braid and size would be good for a baitcaster?

I like braid also for my main line. I use a Mono leader. I want a line that floats for my leader. Floro sinks so I do not use it a leader on C-rigs. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply's. You guys confirmed what I was doing all along. I have been using 30 lb spider wire stealth and 10 lb Vanish Transisition for a leader.

As far as backlash, I find braid easier to untangle than other lines. I will say that the spider wire seems to perform better after about 50-60 cast when some of the coating wears off. It lays on the spool much nicer to. A lot of time after one end has been used, I will respool to another reel then it really does lay on the reel better.

Braid is an aquired taste. After you use it for a while you get used to casting it. I think the rod, and your casting technic really make a huge difference (especially when trying to throw a c-rig with a long leader). I use 30# power-pro braid on a 7' MH fast action rod. I can throw a 1/2oz. c-rig with 4' mono leader a country mile (even into the wind). It's an "all the way around casting technic" that really makes it fly. Kind of similar to a golf swing in a way. End the swing with the rod tip pointed right at your target. I do agree with it being a pain to pick a bird's nest out with small diameter braid. Get a good casting reel, and spend some time getting it adjusted properly. C-rigging with a short rod, or too light of an action is a real pain, in my opinion. A good 7'6 rod will make it even easier too. I just prefer the 7' rod that I use "works for me". Other guys may have a better way for them....But, it works for me.

Guess you could use flourocarbon for the sensitivity but it does not hold up as well in the sharp rocks

I like to use Braid (Berkley Fire Line) as my main line and Flurocarbon as my leader...tried many combo's and Braid/ Flurocarbon seems to be the best combo for me...

Re: Line for Carolina Rig (mkgarrison5)

I've been C-Riggin for about 20years now and started using 30# Power Pro a couple years ago for my "main" line (use 15# big game for leader). The sensitivity is definitely better but I learned pretty quick to back off on my hookset or I'd break my leader almost every time. Fishin in the St. Johns River I like a 1oz. weight and 1/0 or 2/0 hooks!

I use 17lb PLine CXX for my main line and the same thing for my leader. The leader length varies depending on the type of cover and what the fish seem to like. I fish a longer leader in and around grass than I do for brushpiles and rock.

Re: Line for Carolina Rig (dtaylor52)

I use a few different lines for main line. 20# power pro has worked great for me. if I'm in the rocks, or real snaggy water I'll go with 15# big game or 17# G line. The power pro is prefered but getting a snag out really sucks and could mess up your reel! I keep a piece of broom handle in the boat to pull out snags and break off. I go light on the leader, 8# for clear water smallmouth and 10# for most the other times. I will bump up to 12# if Its big bass country. I use P line Flouraclear for leader. you could use straight flouracarbon If your wallet says its OK. I pre-tie my leaders about 4 ft and cut them down on the water If need be.
Please be advised I'm writing from NY so I'm fishing clearer water than most of you. please adjust to your conditions.
I just spooled up my Carolina rod with some 15# power pro. Its been sitting around here so figure I'll try it preseason.
smallmouth wise... I got a few friends who use 7 ft spinning rods with 8-10# flourocarbon main line and 8# flourocarbon leader. they use a 3/8oz. sinker alot with a 6" lizard. They catch some monsters on this deal from 10-40ft!! just a little FYI...

Re: Line for Carolina Rig (capticeman)

Tried the Braid to Mono/Flouro leader and cant keep from breaking the fish off. Have probably broken 30 fish on hooksets and landed 0, so i backed off hookset and lost another 10 b/c the hook never made it through the bait, anyone tell me how to fix these problems??

you know with mono you yank the piss out of it right?? half that with braid and use SHARP hooks like gamakatsus.. dont use the cheap ass hooks. like eagle claw or whatever.. it takes some getting used to..
