    How's Gaston Fishing?

Planning on coming down to fish Thursday - Sunday, looks like it's going to be in the rain. It's been about 10 years since we've been there, putting in at Poplar Creek ramp, just wondering how the fishing has been and if there's still as much grass as there used to be.

Fishing has been decent with steady action in the afternoon (that's when I have been fishing). Not sure how it's going to be since this cold front just came through. Seems like you can always find them somewhere on the lake though.

all stages of spawn going on, I caught 2 different 4 pounders last week that had spawned out and a 6 pounder that hadn't. Of course lots of spots in the 1 to 2 pound range. You won't have any problem finding shallow fish if that's what you want to do.

There is some shad spawn activity as well. There is basically no grass in the lake other than the water willow along the shoreline.

After two days of fishing, we’ve caught a lot of small to medium spots. Only a couple of largemouth. I think the biggest one anyone has called so far is about 2 1/2 pound largemouth yesterday. The most productive bait was wacky worms. Most of them hitting in 5 to 6 feet of water. We’ve caught a few on jerk baits as well and some Ned rigs. It’s raining today, so looks like lots of westerns until it breaks. Maybe later today we can get out for a while.

Hey Greg, I do know that the state High School and youth are having their state tournament going out of Holly Grove. Not sure how many boats but it's for the whole state of Va. P.S. I think I remember running into you down there at Poplar Creek Ramp. HeHe. Good luck and have fun.

Hey man .... Hope you're doing good, I remember that day I met you, and I still have my 2011 PHOENIX 618.
We got back home today about 10:30am, got tired of catching dinks and didn't want to get soaked so we headed home early.
We talked with a lot of the teams fishing the high school event, and all of them were the same as all of us. Lots of fish, but mostly small spots, with very few largemouth in the mix. I got about 25 fish a day, and in 3 days only had 2 largemouth. It's hard to believe the lake has changed so much in the 10 years since we've been there. But on the bright side, I'm on vacation again this coming week, so Smith Mountain Lake will see me several days.

Just got home from five days a Gaston. Got rained out yesterday and real windy this morning but overall it was a good trip. We caught a lot of spots including a total of about six or seven over 3 pounds. Very few largemouth were caught. I brought home a bunch of spotted bass fillets. For those of you never had them. It’s very good eating, mild and white and flaky, almost all the fish were caught in less than 6 feet of water. Spinner baits, wacky worms and jerkbaits took most of the fish.

Some of the high school teams caught quite a few fish. I know one team who caught 30-40 each day, but not big fish. 10 pound bags of 5 fish.
Hang on. I'll help you in 77 minutes.
