Has anyone come up with a really good rigging option for horny toads to where your hookup percentage is better?

i use a #4 ewg superline gamagatsu, just rig it like a texas rig and just skin hook it enough so thats it weedless...... i have about a 90% hook-up rate.....hope this helps........
I'll give that a try. Open to any other suggestions, too.![]()
I like the Zoom horny toad hook. Try to let them have it a second before setting the hook.![]()
i use a number 6/0 gamakatsu super line hook.![]()
I know this sounds stupid, but I like the matzau sickle (sp) hooks, 4 or 5 can't remember, but they are the sickle shaped hook. In open water I set the bend right between the legs and skin hook the top, In grass I use the standard tx rig. The hooks are pretty cheap, I get mine at k-mart. I also use the biggest owner riggen hook available 5 I guess, for ribbets, the curve bend on the shank comes through grass pretty good.
When you get a blowup don't set the hook right away. Drop youre rod tip and let the fish take up the slak, or if the fish runs at the boat reel till you feel the fish and then cross his eyes with the hookset. If you're not using braid you should be.
I put a 5/0 weedless trailer hook on the main hook and have increase my ratio to almost 100%. But like Shawn said, you still have to give the fish some time and make sure he has it.

I like that tip.![]()
I cut a small piece out between the legs, and use the Zoom h-toad hooks this way.
I have not noticed a problem hooking fish and I have been useing them all summer. I have been using a O4 EWG hook. I think the key is to drop your rod tip when they hit, wait to feel them and then cross their eyes. It take patience and pratice but I hook and land over 80% of my hits.
I noticed an increased hook up percentage when I started using the Hookerz Tackle Corkscrew Hooks. Also when I get a blow I drop the rod tip and wait to feel the weight of the fish. If the fish missed I let the HT sink for a few seconds, I have caught quite a few fish that way. I think it's better than reeling a bait out and then throwing another bait back in at the fish.
Gamakatsu G-Mag works good for me like someone else said the hook go's past the end between the legs and you can skin hook it back in the back. My hook-up % has gone up at least 80%.

I learned this when teaching my 11-yr old how to fish with frogs. I had him hold the rod up extremely high (with the reel about chest high, or higher) with the rod tip real high. This pretty much forced him to drop the rod tip when he got bit. This extra lag time really increased his hook-ups. He was having a REAL hard time with the idea of a delayed hook-set. I still have to concentrate pretty hard sometimes myself.![]()
Lots of good advice on rigging. I've experimented with many hook sizes and styles. My main advice I've learned is when the blow up happens. I use braided line, and when the fish blows up.... I FREEZE!!
The fish will set himself if you've got your rod tip up. By the time he moves with the bait, the hook is set. This also keeps me from ripping it away from him. Once I feel the surge of the fish, that when I start to horse him in. (I'm usually around matted grass when I throw the horney toad)
On the few occasions when the blowup happens and he doesn't get hooked, I know he never really took the bait and I would have missed him no matter what I did. That's how confident I am in this.
Oh yeah...and just like when you're buzzbait fishing, you should have a Senko rigged and ready to throw into any blowups that don't hook up.
