    Let's talk trebles

I've got an aging fleet of MB 110's that all have varying degrees of use and wear. I would like to start replacing hooks on them. Do you guys replace with the same outer barb style or is there a better alternative out there now? I really don't want to impact bait action, but I'd also like to explore maybe a wide gap option if they work well for these jerkbaits.

I use VMC Barbarian trebles. They are outbarb also. Same #. They are a bit difficult to find. No change in the action. If you put a heavier hook on there will be a change in the action.

I'm pretty sure that the VMC Barbarians are the stock replacements. They sell them both as VMCs and under the Megabass brand name, but I don't believe there is any difference. I think you need to go size 6 in those for a regular 110.

A lot of folks use the Gamakatsu Aaron Martens Nano trebles on 110s. Size 5 for a regular 110--they run smaller than other brands. They're definitely stronger than the stock hooks and weigh just about the same if not exactly the same. If you've got any 110 Juniors you're going to have to either look to Japan or at a different hook model as the Jr has size 8 hooks and the Nano style trebles aren't available in anything smaller than a 6 in the US (and I thought not available at all, but City17Banner set me straight on that one). The regular Gamakatsu round bend trebles or Owner ST-36 would be good options in that case.

No worries sir! Unless you start using truly diminutive jerkbaits such as the Megabass X-50 or the Duo Tetra Works Perrako spybait, there's rarely a need to delve into size #8, #10, or even #12 replacement treble hooks. If there is such a requirement, JLS has a decent supply of them and as a last resort, you can always try Samurai Tackle, just be prepared for the outlandish shipping charges they routinely charge though.

For the new Megabass X-Nanahan (X-75) family of lures (and the MB Vision 110 Jr) which use #8 treble hooks, I have found the DUO Realis Nano Hooks to be very close to the stock MB outbarb treble hooks and the replacement DUO hooks do not impact the lure in any significant way, especially the more buoyant X-Nanahan +1 & +2 models. The DUO Realis Nano treble hooks can be found on TW in sized ranging from #2-#8.

Good luck with upgrading your MB Vision 110's sir!

As mentioned above, the Gammy A-Mart finesse trebles. Something to consider, with the slow rise 110's, is using a heavier hook to get them to suspend. Daiichi Deathtraps are another extremely sharp hook that are "finessey". Don't come in #5 at TW, but they have #4 and #6. They used to have a #5, maybe they still do, but I haven't done any searching for them.

Daiichi D99Q Death Trap light wire treble hooks range from #2 all the way to #14 and are made from a light wire gauge that easily match the Gamakatsu A-Mart G-Finesse Nano hooks and the MB Katsuage outbarb treble hooks. In addition, the MB Katsuage outbarb treble hook are indeed made by VMC but use a slightly lighter gauge of wire than the "normal" VMC outbarb treble hooks.

It has been my on-the-water experience that the Daiichi, Gamakatsu, and MB Katsuage hooks all perform well on the Megabass Vision 110 and there is no appreciable difference between the treble hooks, I simply use whichever replacement treble hook I have on hand when I need to replace the stock hooks.

I like Owner st-36s in size 6 for 110 sized jerkbaits.

I have also tried Hayabusa TBL930 with their special coating (not the black nickel coating) in the same sizes and I like them as well. They are a little more spendy than the Owner hook but seem to be great quality.

If treble hooks get any more expensive, it'll be cheaper to toss the lure than to replace the hooks.

No. Wait a minute. Lure are getting more expensive, also.

    Looks like they've got us.

Just used some Gammy A marts and VMC Barbarians to change out all my stock. My fingers are sore now but my jerkbaits look great
