What are thought on colors and rattles on jigs??

Ok when do you use rattle vs not using them on a jig, also do you all use black/blue year round?? I normally keep a black/blue tied on as well as a greenpumkin with some orange and purple strands witha picacraw chunk on it!!

I only use rattles in dirty water, unless my partner is kicking butt with rattles. Colors are mainly clear water, PB&J, brown/purple flash, Missouri or Texas craw, black/blue for cloudy days. Trailers mainly green pumkin, craws and twin tails or Paca Chunks.

mine is mostly like David only i almost always use rattles in mine
on the jigs that i make which are like a eatkins jig i put rattle band colors on them so i can use them with or without the rattles
but as far as colors go David pretty much covered the ones that i mainly use as well

I only use rattles in really muddy water and when fishing really shallow, heavy cover.

For colors, I primarily use greens and browns, but in really cold weather (below 55 degrees) I will use a black skirt.

I have rattles on clear or dirty water (confidence thing)

Color wise, I agree w/ David and Don. Darker days I go with Black Blue unless the fish are telling me different. I like to stay with Green Pumpkins and darker browns.

If I am swimming a jig I prefer white or black blue.

Went out today and threw a black/blue 3/8oz jig all day and did good, caught about 15 today off of it but the water was high and dirty!! USed a pica craw chunk also, sent the hook one time and it took the pinchers off the chunk.

I like the Paca Chunks. Great action, but they do tear easy. This is the first year I have used them, and have done well with them. Had good luck on Smallies swimmin a pumpkin colored w/rattles and a paca chunk. In years past all I used was #11 pork frog. but that was with a black/blue jig. You guys are really expanding my color selections.

    Thanks for all the info.

I usually always have a rattle on my jig. Most of the time I throw a black and blue jig. It works so I don't worry too much about it.

Re: What are thought on colors and rattles on jigs?? (Mark Perry)

I use a rattle when not using it isn't producing. I believe jigs make plenty of noise banging around on a hard bottom, and rattles could put a picky bass off. If you have mostly a soft bottom lake then a rattle would probably be required equipment unless the water is clear enough for bass to see it easily. A jig on bottom supposedly imitates a crawfish. They most likely sneak around making very little noise, yet are detected by bass. So to me a quieter jig is more natural to a more mature wary bass. A 3-4 pounder might eat it anyway, and anything smaller is much more likely not to demand so much natural in a lure. Given the choice between rattle and trailer, I'll take a pork or plastic trailer every time. I also think adding hard bulk like a rattle can cause a bass to drop the jig quicker. Adding a soft plastic trailer keep the jig being eaten longer.

I always use a rattle except on a small Eakins jig. Primary colors I use are black/blue, texas craw (black brown chartruse), and spring craw (green pumpkin with some brown and blue.

PS Jeremy, dont stick all those fish now, wait til Saturday
