    Best TopWater Lure

IYO, whats the best topwater lure you can use? Does it depend on conditions, where you fish, Etc.... I am kinda new to BASS fishing.. I have not yet caught a Bass on topwater.. I have had several slaps or rolls at my Stanley Ribbit Frog, but they just want take it down.. I do not jerk or try to set the hook when I see the Roll.. I'm told to wait till the fish takes it.... I also throw a Bagley Bang-O-Lure.. I have not had no strikes on it yet, but it's suppose to be a premier topwater lure down here on the Mobile/Tensaw Delta.. I have a hydrilla gorilla buzz bait that I have not used yet... I dont know whats the problem... Is there any key info here that I'm needing? To tell you the truth..I have not caught a fish on anything except plastic and crankbaits... Tell me whats up. Thanks alot...

1 choice would be a super fluke in perl white. It makes a good search bait if you know there hitting on top. If they start short striking it I'll switch to a spook, or a sammy knock off, I'm too cheep to buy the real thing.

    Re: Best TopWater Lure (shawn706)

Here are 2 lures that I would recommend for anyone starting out.

1 Tiny torpedo. Baby bass, chrome/black back, and the ghost yellow.

2 Pop-r. Silver/black back, Baby bass, and the clear w/ blue head.

Both of these are proven topwater baits. Very easy to fish, and both will catch numbers and quality fish. The first thing I do with them, is change the hooks.
Buy some gamakatzu # 6 trebles. You also need to find some Good feathered trebles like the Gamakatzu #6 or lucky craft trebles.

Next spool your reel with a good MONO line, in 10-12lb test. Mono will float, and not impair the action of the baits. As far as the rod, I like a 6'6" med, moderate action rod, or something with a soft tip.

As far as fishing them, use short quick jerks of the rod, then let the bait sit. Most of the strikes will come when the bait is sitting still. One thing I do when working a Pop-r, is I like to have a little slack in my line, when the bait is sitting still. I do not want to feel the fish, when it strikes. I seem to get a high hook up percentage when I do this. I want the fish to completely suck the lure down. Most of the time, my fish will have the whole bait in their mouth. When the fish do hit the bait, DO NOT JERK TO SET THE HOOK! I simply reel down fast, and pull back. The Gammy hooks will do the rest.

Hope this helps some. Check out my post in the lounge, and you'll see why I like a Pop-r!

The longer you can let a topwater bait sit still the better!
I used to like Devil's Horses but the new ones suck! I now use Boy Howdy's that I trick out and paint a little.
I also use a lot of Sammy's at certain times.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned a Zara Spook, I know it takes a little time to get the pattern down for walking the dog but man.....I have caught pretty much all of my biggest fish on it. Chrome with a black back....

Got to stand by my Pop-R. You can drive fish nuts with one.

I would say some type of PopR..... they are normally good for numbers of fish.

Spooks and the not-yet-metioned BUZZBAIT!!! Spook puppy in a silverish color and a buzzbait in black or chartruse.

It has to be the soft plastic Apopalypse. I have replace my spooks and pop-r with this bait. Rig it weedless with a 4/0 hook; float all day long.

    Re: Best TopWater Lure (DMAC)

any floating moss or vegatation try a scum frog or a bronzeye frog.....calm open water the torpedo is great.....but if i can get a little wind to chop up the surface thats when i go to the buzzbait!....but about the best all around top water in my opinion is the SPOOK,.......just my 2 cents...............kp
