    40ft steel container- questions

Buying a 40ft used steel container for our hunting cabin to store UTVs, gear, etc. all year long. The place I'm buying it from said it would take only 2 or 3 RR ties to support it on unprepared earth (grass/dirt). That doesn't seem reasonable to me. They also say they can drop this thing on my support timbers from a tilt-bed truck?

Also... how difficult to drill holes for power cords, bolts for gear hangers and also cut ventilation strips in one of these things?

Anyone with experience doing this or tips that may help us?

It will work if your ground is solid. If it is prone to being really muddy, it will sink down. Running wires and cable runs is easy, we do it in the military all the time.

It wouldn't hurt to have a tie every 10' but they can drop it off a tilt bed. We had one for a hunting lease for a couple years a while back. Kept tractor, tiller, and some other stuff in there and stands and ground blinds, decoys etc in there under lock and key! We had a concrete pad where a barn once stood we put it on.

We’ve got one that we use as secondary storage at our shop and it was easy to add lighting and power to.

You can do a lot with them, I worked on a project at Natick lab, 3 of them put together for a mobile kitchen, had some with showers bathrooms. Another was a mobile lab for biological hazard testing....

Hurricane Irma took out this guys old house in ST. Augustine, so he replaced it with this. Made of all steel containers.

I'd probably use at least 4 PT timbers/railroad ties. The drop-off is easy. They set one end on the ground and you slide timbers into position as the truck pulls forward.

You can buy container vents. I sell over the road tractor trailer parts and service. We also sell container parts. Do an online search and you will find them. Also, you can weld hooks etc. versus bolting stuff to the sides. mabs ke sure the top doesn't have leaks. You can buy smoke bombs to test for leaks.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts/experiences. I'm putting this in NE AR and it's coming from Memphis and it is a 'one tripper'. I've decided to buy a 20ft vs. 40ft and it's used... delivered it's just under $3k.

I would probably have the wood sitting on some rock so it's not in contact with mud all the time. Even pressure treated wood will rot fairly quickly if it's sitting in the mud all the time.

I have been in one. It was on several concrete blocks. Used for storage and had no ventilation. It was an oven! I definitely would want vents!
