Still not sure what the issue is

So I sent my helix 9 si unit to Humminbird and they returned it with the note that it seemed to be operating fine. They did send me the upgraded transom transducer (less the mount to attach it to the boat) so good on them!

Today I spent some time checking things out before putting everything back together. I placed the new transducer at the top of a bucket of water to test. With just the new transducer I get a temp and depth reading with the depth changing a few tenths occasionally and reading a depth of 2.2’.
I then tried just the shoot thru trandsducer and got no temp reading and the old fixed 1.9 depth with no change that it was doing before out on the lake. Swapped it out for the old transom transducer and got a temp reading but the same 1.9 depth with no change, all without using the y cable.
Then hooked up the new transducer and shoot thru transducer to the y cable and hooked to the unit. Now, just temp and the old, never changing 1.9 depth. So u hooked the y cable, just put the new transom cable to the unit and temp and the 2.2 depth reading that changes a few tenths suggesting that it is working. Hmmm.
So, ordered a new y cable and I guess I’ll see if that gets the new transducer working hooked up to it.

Im a little stumped on what else to try. Suggestions?

Whoever moved this here to the correct place-THANK YOU!! Hard to misread Garmin for hummingbird but apparently I did. Oops.

Might have to do your testing on the lake. I wouldn't place much stock in garage and bucket testing. Temp should work though.
My wife asks if I'm going to fish every day. I can't fish every day. Some days I might be sick.

I agree with that. Im a little perplexed why even the new transom transducer reads differently when plugged into the unit directly vs using the y cable. If I get a new y cable and it still does that I’ll really be stymied.

It is just the way the cable is wired. Only one end has the temperature wires. As Lwinch said you cant do much testing in a bucket. JMO Bob

A bucket of water and the boat hull will give two different depth readings.

A typical shoot-thru transducer used with a SI transducer and Y cable doesn't have a temp sensor.
Even if you have the XP --- T transducer, the temp sensor won't be connected when it is connected to the Y cable==no circuit.

I would suspect the in-hull transducer but could only determine that with on the water testing to isolate the problem. As a note if not already mentioned, the y-cable connections can sometimes be hard to make a good connection.

That y cable definitely has to be pushed hard to get in there for sure.

Wayne, are u saying the new transom transducer XHS 9 HDSI 180 T won’t show a water temp once on the water? I know the thru hull one doesn’t but both the existing and the new transom transducers show a temperature it’s the depth reading that seems to go south using them in the y cable.

This whole thing started with losing a depth reading at speed so I’m sure hoping we solve that. I don’t think temp reading has gone away.

The HDSI transducer will do temp when connected no matter how or where. It’s the added 2D via Y cable that will not.

Gotcha. I’m just hoping that one comes through and solves the losing bottom thing. Thanks Wayne!!!
