    Actual distance from transducer to target with livescope

    Having about 1 yrs experience with livescope I have noticed that many times in deeper water, say 10-20ft, a target will show at some distance out and at a certain depth. I can make a cast of the approximate length and watch as the bait sinks beyond the target (say a brushpile). When I contact the brush my distance from the boat is considerably less than the projected image on the livescope screen. This happens often. Is this signal the same as side imaging where the sonar beam can only compute distance from the transducer to the object? That has been an adjustment I've made over the years in scanning with side imaging based on water depth. Is livescope the same?

    How is it that you accurately know the distance from the boat to the brush?
    It is NOT like side imaging that calculated the distance from the transducer to the object in a straight line. It uses multiple elements to calculate the actual distance and depth of returns.

    I just used scope for the first time last weekend and immediately noticed this. We were fishing maybe 30-35ft from the bank(max) it seemed like way less. And the scope grid was way out at 40-50-60ft sometimes along with my bait. I actually told the guy who's boat it was that there is no way we are 50-60ft off the bank. Something is a miss. And I get it, if the transducer isn't pointed at a direct 90° to the bank its gonna be a flawed scenario but I agree with u with what ur saying. I don't know if it stretches the image or distance? But with that being said I ordered a lvs-34 and a 126sv.

    I've thought lots of times it was wrong both in range and depth and it is to some degree but not as much as is implied here. For example, a small target, such as a jig, hanging under a floating jug at a measured depth and distance will be deadly accurate. This can be verified using a Force trolling motor and remote. Each click on the remote rotates the shaft 2 degrees. A larger target such as a school of crappie or bait produces lots of returns. The resulting image you see on screen, as you rotate the transducer left and right will sway both in depth and distance. It could be due to now pointing at different targets or where they are in the cone. For pointing accuracy, I choose the closest and shallowest. The spec is a 20 degree cone. So it is technically impossible for it to be 100% accurate. This means you could see a fish and see your lure exactly at it, but just maybe.....the fish didn't see your lure. So it's not your fault. You did everything right. Has to be Livescope error.

    I guess the cone angle can make a difference where a target appears similar to the 2d arches. As the fish passes thru the beam the arch starts upward. When said fish gets in center of beam there is a full arch. Then as the fish passes out of the beam only the down side of the arch shows up. This could explain the "movement of the school or tree" when rotating the transducer on LS. Weird to me but I'm just curious why my line angle is more vertical when I contact brush than I would have expected at a given dist/depth.
