I'm attaching a picture of a placard on a 1990 201 Champion dual console. The placard just says V6 on the hp rating. Question. Does this mean I can hang a 225hp or even a 250hp V6 on this boat?Screenshot_20230305-164634~2.png

Wow!!!!! Really???? Even a 1990 hull?
My placard says "Any V6". I would think our hulls are basically the same.

So, question , how fast can you safely drive it before it's starts getting out of control with the Chine walk?

Cool. Thanks. !!!
There’s a logical explanation for all this. ChampioNman or Tx Champ can explain it all. Has to do with year of boats and years they started building the larger hp motors.
I don't know about that. 225 was the biggest OMC that I could order in 1994 but no doubt there were bigger motors somewhere. I suspect the placard rating was set by the manufacturer but in accordance with coast guard guidelines and I believe that there were no limits on boats over 20 feet. Pat has said there were some 201's that had V8 transoms. And remember that cover shot...forget which mag... that had a 94 204 with two big motors on the back. Can't remember what they were either, but they were big boys and the pic was sure cool!

If I remember they were V-8 Rudes, my 89 201 has an any V-6 placard also, it has a 225 HO Johnson on the back.
Some of them say V8 on the coast guard plate. I saw one in Houston with an Evinrude XP 300 and it was a beast.
My G2 is a pretty strong HO. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 275 hp. Maybe more

There is a 10% allowance in HP.
Considering the age and how much things have changed since then would it not be reasonable to go by weight? That 90 Rude 225 weighed 480 lbs. A new SHO is like 550. If I factor in the weight and then age of an older transom I’m not sure I’d hang that on there. Or I’d at least check it out and maybe get the transom reinforced. I’m not saying don’t or you can’t, just thinking out loud and making conversation.![]()
2008 Skeeter 21I. Yamaha 250 Series II.
2011 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 4x4.
6 years on mine and the transom hasn't fallen off yet...
