    Pros using spinning gear

I am quite surprised how many pros are using spinning gear at these two events in Florida with all that grass. Im watching Ike right now using what appears to be topwater on a spinning rod. I know most are using a wacky rig but they don’t appear to be concerned with all the grass

Well I am not a pro or even close to understanding how one fishes. That said half my gear is spinning gear, so I guess I don’t understand why you wouldn’t use it? Some days I will use it more or less than others, say really windy for example. But I can’t think of a single lure I have that I wouldn’t throw with either. I am interested in understanding more though.

in my mine casting a lure in junk is much more efficient using a baitcaster with heavy line then spinning but guess not

You throw a 12 or 14 pound leader on a mh spinning rod, you’d be surprised what kind of junk you can fish. I prefer it fishing weightless plastics.

I have some pretty heavy set up spinning rigs, heavy braid, leaders, high ratio reels. Part of it for me is I was always very comfortable with a spinner. Another part is I fish a spinner left handed and bait cast right. So I can get a little relief if I need. I mostly junk fish, I usually have 4 rods out, 2 of each, but I can interchange almost everything I do. Again I am simple, certainly not saying it’s the best or most efficient way. I’m here to learn too.

Dont knock it till you try it. I switched to spinning gear 20 years ago when I started getting elbow issues from my work. 7 pound floro on dropshot, 6 floro on shakey, and 8 XT berkley on T-rig 4 inch worm with 1/64 ounce bullet sinker.

Have one always for wacky rig and most other times there is a smaller setup for the ned rigs. Liberated and old walleye rod and put a decent reel on it and started drop shotting late last year and had some fun and may throw a smaller crankbait with one but the rest are baitcasters.

Shaw won his first two Events with spinning gear decades ago and he grew up on orange. With this, I’d rather bobber fish.

Spinning gear doesn’t necessarily mean finesse fishing. I throw a wacky rig senko on a spinning rig with 30# braid and a 17# flouro leader.

I think somewhere in the bottom of my rod box is a dusty old spinning combo

I fished team tournaments with a guy who never would pick up a bait casting rod He just didn't like them. Me, I don't hate but, don't like Spinning rods.

I fish spinning rods most of the time I'm on the water ,even a carolina rig is on a spinning rod, the only baits I don't like on a spinning rod are a crankbait, spinnerbait or chatterbait or trap so I guess power baits in other words. Braid with fluoro leader changed the world for me

I was also surprised about the spinning reel use. It also surprised me that they were using a lot of Senko stick baits in both T's

My opinion is that it's just another tool. For example I have 2 wacky set ups. One on a 7.6MH cast 20lb braid which is primarily used when a jig or t-rig isn't working. 7.3M spin 12lb floro when I need to back off them further. I can get a 5" senko out about 40ft with the cast and about 60ft with the spin.

I use spinning gear all the time on tidal rivers for wacky rigs and drop shots in some really thick vegetation.
