Re: Smart Craft Engine Temperatures (Yellow Jacket)

At idle, your temps will range from 125-155 Degrees (depending on operating conditions, thermostat condition, water pressure and water temps).

WOT temps will be substantially lower as the poppet valve should be open.

Re: Smart Craft Engine Temperatures (EuropeanAM)

I finally got my Smart Craft Speedo and Tach installed along with System Link gauges for water pressure and engine temperature. First time on the lake yesterday, with 72 degF water temperature, the engine ran 140-150 degF at idle but dropped to 105-110 degF at WOT. The water pressure was 14 psi at WOT. Is this normal or does it indicate a thermostat problem?

Idle temp is "a little" high. Not high enough to set a fault, but warm, nonetheless.

Water pressure at WOT is LOW. The two may well be related!!!

When was your water pump last replaced? When chasing down cooling system issues..... ALWAYS start at the source: the Water Pump!

Don't forget to check for wood debris underneath the impeller plate, or trapped in the low water pickup openings as well.

Re: Smart Craft Engine Temperatures (EuropeanAM)

    Hi Don,
Thanks once again for sharing your vast knowledge.

The water pump was serviced by the dealer while the boat was in the shop for the Smart Craft install. This was the first time on the lake. The 140-150 degF at idle was observed in the driveway even before this first trip to the lake and it was the same on the lake. The water pressure at idle is about 3 psi. This engine has a history of high temp issues but usually these occurred under load at 2000 RPM. These were occurrances were before I repalced the prop that was installed on initial setup of the new boat by the dealer. With that prop I wasn't able to get up to 5000 RPM WOT.

I though you have said that 12 psi at WOT was minimum and that 15 psi was ideal.

    Thanks again,
    Mark

Woops, I just noticed I was in the wrong board. This is a 2003 Optimax 135.

No problem...... based on that engine, you're right in spec. Like to see 15 at WOT, but 14 willl do the trick.

Thanks Don. Can you point my to the message tread that covers interfacing Smart Craft to HDS-7 GPS speed?
