    95 200 rude vindicator questions?????

Last monday me and the wife went down to lake fork. While running to the second fishing hole I heard a noise from the engine. Shut it down and found a dime size hole in the lower unit that came from inside the lower unit. We idled back to the ramp and put her on the trailer. Called my dad and told him I was ready for a gift. He had a 98 200 rude vindicator that he replaced after #1 cylinder broke a rod bolt and trashed the block. He had replaced the lower unit with a new bomb made lower unit about 9 months before the motor blew. He gave me the motor that was in boxes. So now I will replace my lower unit with the one he gave me. My question is I bought this boat and motor used 3 years ago and I have no history of any updates that may have been done. What updates do I need to do? I have heard of some high speed jets that would back out or something like that. I also know of the upper bearing housing bolts coming loose. Would like to know if doing a link and sync would make any difference. Can rusty and/or others give me some needed advise. I do not want to have any motor problems in the future.

You will need to replace the carb drain plugs with 6 of the 344267 and 6 of the 305739 o-rings, you also need to replace the #2 carb main jet.

Use the XD-50 oil and decarb once a year, wouldn't hurt to replace the VRO with a new OMS pump either.

Thanks rusty for the quick response. I did replace the VRO 2 years ago. I have done a decarb but its time to do it again. I will replace the the drain plugs and o-rings. Is there any advantage to letting a qualified evinrude mechanic do a link and sync? I am a foreign car mechanic but these marine engines scare me a little.

What size jet for the #2 carb?

Unless you have a problem with acceleration or dieing at idle I would say the sink and link are OK.

I need your model number for the jet size.

    Redneck,

I have a 97 200hp Vindicator, the upper bearing housing bolts came loose last year. I later found out that this was an upgrade that was never done to my motor by the previous owner. It cost me alot of money to get it fixed. For the few bucks it might cost to get new bolts, i would highly recomend upgrading.

Rusty, is the top bearing housing bolts coming loose or breaking only a problem with the 98 year model or is it for all years? I have looked at my bolts and they look ok but I have not checked the torque on the bolts.I will get the model or serial numbers tonight.

Is my old lower unit worth anything? It has a dime size hole in the case where the input shaft comes down and meets the reverse gear.

I had to check with Seahorse as my head is full of DI and E-Tec stuff.

The 1996 motors were the ones that had a problem with the crankcase head bolts coming out.

The gear case is most likely junk.

They had a bolt kit for those motors that had a lock patch on them.

    Re: 95 200 rude vindicator questions????? (RUSTY63)

Finally got a chance to get out and run her. I noticed the rpm's seemed lower than I remember. If my memory is correct the rpm's before were 6000-6100 on a hot day and 5800-5900 on a cold day. This morning I was stretching her out and saw ONLY 5000 RPMS!!!! Later in the day i took some more speed runs and they were in the 5400 rpms range. I noticed the speed was close to normal 60 to 62 gps. What could have caused this??? She ran good I might add but the rpms were too low, same prop, new style gearcase.

I think you may have that backwards, you should be turning more RPM's on a cold day rather than on a hot day.

"What could have caused this?" A bad tach or bad rectifier, you posted the speed is the same so there must be a problem with the tach.
