Throttle Cable Adjustment?

I have a 2007 Merc 250 ProXS (on a 2007 Triton 215X). The throttle backs off by itself (if I don't keep pressure onit) when it is fully advanced (WOT). Is there an adjustment to correct this?

Also, my dealer manually made quite a few last minute adjustments to the throttle cable when I picked the boat up as it was originally WAY too tight/stiff. He made these adjustments on the fly and I have since learned you really need to adjust the cable with a computer (?) to make sure the TPS is fully advanced...I think.

So my second question...is there a way to make sure the TPS is actually fully advancing and I am getting full power out of my motor when a perhaps less than qualified tech manually made adjustments to the cable?

Redline addressed a similar issue that I caught on my motor from a factory setting. Get with him there is a fine line there and he can explain exactly how that adjustment is made to ensure true WOT

My 07 backed off like that but thought it was a safety feature.......when you let go it is supposed to release as a safety feature......unless I'm reading this wrong which after my day is entirely possible.

I just had that happen to my 175 Pro Xs last time I had the boat out. I was running WOT for a few seconds and all of a sudden it just started to slow down a little. I actually had to hold it all the way forward for WOT......what gives?

The DDT will tell ya that the tps has a smooth movement when the peddle is depressed.

Two things in play here... if you DON'T have a hotfoot:

1. There is a drag adjustment in the remote control. It should be able to hold the throttle in position, without backing off. The "safety" feature referred to is not in the throttle... it's called a "kill switch" or "safety lanyard" (which should be attached to the boat operator).

2. To ensure WOT, with OR WITHOUT a hotfoot: With the engine OFF, have someone push the throttle to WOT position and hold it there. Go to port side of the powerhead, look at the throttle plate linkage. If you put your finger against the "roller", you should be able to rotate it "ever so slightly" further (1/16" or less).
It SHOULD NOT be dead against the stop (as this will cause premature throttle plate/shaft wear).

If you have MORE than 1/16" travel, one of the following needs adjustment:

1. Hotfoot stops.
2. Throttle Cable
3. Stops/Linkage on Motor (this MUST only be done with the DDT or Computer Diagnostic System, so that proper TPS range can be confirmed)!

These proceedures apply to Optimax Models (all V-6).
