Permits for running tournaments at Kerr

I had heard about this in the past, but thought it only concerned large groups / events / clubs. Park Ranger guy threatened our 10 boat event today at Rudds, saying if we pulled out scales and weighed fish, we would get tickets. 10 BOATS! We moved to plan B and was able to get by for the day with some sneakyness! Just a bunch of Big Gov. BS...and another way of controlling us and collecting more taxes if and when they can. At least 2 other small groups where at Rudds without the proper permits...one group did get tickets / or a ticket so I heard...not sure if the group as an entity got a ticket, or individuals. The fine is undetermined at this time.....such bad law breakers those guys are! Pure Crap! Another group there without the proper permits rolled the dice where able to weigh and where not bothered by Ranger guy....I guess he left the ramp? Just a bunch of BS...I figure my permit is the one on my dash I got when I payed $4 to launch. Good news is a full day of fishing and NO motor fire!

Re: Permits for running tournaments at Kerr (Hump)

They have required a permit for a tournament of any size at Kerr ramps since October, 2009. It's free if you have 15 boats or less.

They do it to keep people from having too many boats at a certain ramp and has been in effect for years and like Greg said is free for under 15 boats. Also keeps you from having 300 boats launching out of Rudds....lol....for 6 tournaments with 50 boats with them thinking there is enough parking.

They also do it to keep track of how many tournament boats will be on the whole lake on any given day since it is required for every launch site and is tracked and handled by the event coordinator at North Bend.

At first he pizzed me off( not my first run in with a park ranger from the Kerr area ). He went right for Glen B "Who's in charge of this? You know this is illegal?" Then he goes into telling us how it is suppose to work and the bs then it got very comical. "I am going to tell all the other Park rengers and if anyone see's a fish get weighed you are getting a ticket" I know they have a job to do, but give me a break. I was surprised he could back in the truck with his chest poked all out like it was.

Re: Permits for running tournaments at Kerr (Sterling)

The real reason they are doing this is to control every aspect of our lives. Next thing they will want is "everyone" to get a permit 10 days prior to fishing so they can track this or that....just another small step towards the New World Order and total Government Control. I do not need the Park Rangers to claim they are controlling the numbers using the ramp. If I as an individual, or if I'm with a group of several boats and we show up and the place is full, that is my/our problem and I can take responsibility for myself and simply go elsewhere. The rest of the public can do the same thing. I can understand large events, and can even understand charging a few bucks to help cover the cost of monitoring it and I guess to cover the cost of the paper the permit is printed on. But to even require a permit for 10 - 15, or 20 boats is simply stupid, even if it is free unless maybe if they are going to block off and "reserve" parking spots for us....Now that I may pay for? Just wondering, if I do get one of these permits next year, are they going to "reserve" me a parking spot for that day? If not, than getting a permit is even a larger pile of BS than I originally thought. Yea, Sterling...I sure wish the Rangers where as friendly as everyone else I run into in that region....some real nice folk down there!

There are many other countries you can move to....

One of the best things about Kerr is the control that the Corps keep on the lake. Having grown up on the banks of Smith Mountain I'm well aware of what a lake looks like when there is no control. Between owning the majority of the lakefront land, permitting the docks built, slot limits, to permitting the tournies, thier only goal is to keep the lake as pristeen as possible for our enjoyment and recreation, while still providing a major source of water and power.

As was said earlier, the permit for small tournies is FREE. Personally, if I were a tourney director I would not want to plan my club event for a particular ramp just to show up and find 10 or 12 other small clubs launching there. Especially when some people are traveling several hours to get there. By using the permit system they are merely managing the number of people at each particular ramp. When I show up at Kerr and don't have to wait in line behind 150 other boats, I certainly appreciate it.

If you get the permit (free or not) ...is your parking space reserved? If not, what exactly are they doing for you? I guess some of us are just a little more needy than others. Get in line and drink up my friends!

Our club was one of the other club having a tournament there that got a ticket . We knew about the rule if it was more than 15 boats but didn't realize we had to register. The ticket was a 50 dollar ticket lol. We will be registering our club before we go back to kerr. atleast the fish bit well.

Re: Permits for running tournaments at Kerr (Varinabassin)

You don't register your club, you fill out a Special Event Permit Application and mail it to the Corp office at the dam for approval/disapproval. Usually you will hear back in a week to ten days unless you submit it when they are first taking applications for the coming year, then it can take a few weeks.

Re: Permits for running tournaments at Kerr (Hump)

OK here all you need to know for Tournaments in NC on Wildlife Ramps You can get a blanket permit by calling NC Wildlife Resorce Comm at 1 919 707 0150 and you will get a nice Lady by the name of Jo Ann, and she can issue you a blanket permit for 15 boats or less on any bat time or bat place for free Now if you having a bigger one over 15 you can get a one time permit for Free also North Carolina has had the Permit requirement in place for 10 or 15 years, you were just luck if not caught till now. Permit is good only on Wildlife Ramps, the Core lake is a real Fire Drill, big time bust!! and alot of paper work and takes time. You can avoid all this Gov Co. regulations by using a private ramp, or in the old days meet on an Island an bag em, weight em and pay em load the boat and What Tournament Officer Sure enough just call the number about the the Lady will get you fixed up, or just have me show up I got 3 or 4 under different club names for more than 15. This is the Government working at its finest the governor's brother in law needed a job I guess about 3 for 4 elections ago. Save a Parking Place You got to be kidding, and believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy
