If you have a Lowrance GPS capable unit at the dash link it to your Smartcraft gauges. You'll never look back. I have more info if you want as well as many other posts here.
Which speedo do you have?
I have, on a couple of occassions, run into one that was defective, or had a defective harness.
And, on at least one occassion, found one that worked perfectly once it was unplugged (both ends of the harness) and then plugged back in......

I don't have to tow one. I will look to see here in a bit.
I have linked my Lowrance to it already.
Two (or more) suggestions:
1. Unplug BOTH ends of the S/C Speedo cable- from the gauge, and from the junction block. Check for corrosion, and reinstall. Retest.
2. Swap the plug positions on the junction block for the Tachometer and Speedometer. See if the problem moves to the Tachometer (rather than the speedometer). This would indicate a faulty, or corroded junction block (also make sure the junction block is mounted under the dash with the plugs coming out "horizontal"- NOT VERTICAL where water can be trapped inside the connections!
3. Remove and inspect the terminating resistor, both the one on the junction block (or in the cable if using the blue 10-pin connector cable that has the yellow band). Same for the engine end.
4. If all of the above make no difference, email me for directions to test the terminating resistors. At this point, you would either have a faulty terminating resistor, faulty Speedo Harness, or a faulty speedo.
Let me know what you come up with!
