I just got diagnosed about 5 months ago (a1C was 6.8/fasting blood glucose was about 170, so it was caught early thanks to 2X/year doctor visits). Much of the diet stuff you hear in the popular media is garbage information. I cut out my daily cereal and other carbs ("healthy" and other wise) and eat a low sugar yogurt for breakfast and then a Premier protein shake and Atkins bar for lunch and went from 210 to 185. I was put on metformin at the time of diagnosis, and it was a rough adjustment due to back cramps around the kidney area and GI issues, but that went away after about 3 months of being on it. I take a blood sugar reading about every morning using a test strip/reader and my blood sugar has been in the 110-130 range, which is good. I haven't increased my exercise much, but that could be my next step in the process.
