Smith Mountain is definitely the most popular around, the Elite Series held a tournament there last year. Claytor and Moomaw are both 1-1.5 hrs away and good fisheries as well. Smith is the biggest (~20,000 acres) with the other two being ~2-5 thousand acres.
An early welcome to VA...![]()
Smith Mountain Lake is just around the corner from you but beware it is overrun with pleasure boaters and jetskis during the summer months. Have to be careful there during these times. I personally prefer to fish at night during the summer for this reason. SML is a deep clear resivoir and can be very tough at times but can also produce some nice size bass, especially during the early spring. I live about 45 min from SML and fish there quite often when I actually get to go these days. If you love to fish docks then you will be in heaven at SML as well. Just about every inch of the lake is developed with the exception of the upper ends of the two rivers and a few creeks.

Philpott ,largemouth ,smallmouth &crappie It is very clear and often difficult to fish in the summer. You can see brush piles 20 to 30 feet deep! keep you spinning rod on the deck all the time or in your hand.

Welcome to VA Derrick! The fellas have already laid out the waters that are closest to Roanoke. I get out to SML a few times each year, mabybe we can hook up. Although I ain't exactly sure why you would leave SC to move to the western part of VA though.Heck, I'm a part time resident of Moncks Corner myself, kinda surprised we've never run into each other.

I took a new position with the Forest Service and I will be working out the SO for the George Washington Jefferson National Forest there in Roanoke. Yea I hate to leave Moncks Corner but it was a offer I could not refuse. Once I get settled in I will look you up and see if you will show me the ropes on SML. I fished the cooper river, Santee River, Sampit River, and the Black River here. I stayed away for Lake Moultrie due the the danger of Stumps.
Are there any clubs around Roanoke that are accepting new memebers?
derrick did you ever hear of a club called "the bear creek fishing club". My wife is from Goose Creek and lived in Moncks Corner for awhile back in the 80"s. weclome to va
