I think the XR6 is a great motor. I personally don't know of any problems with the 2001 model but Don may have more info for you there. I certainly would not be afraid of an XR6 as long as it checks out with your mechanic.
I have the exact motor and have no complaints. Other than the faded paint which I just took care of it's a great running little gas hog.
