    Gel coat repair....

I have two small but definitely noticeable scratches from dock nails that I would like to repair. I called the local expert and he wants $575 to repair, so I was thinking about doing it myself. I’ve never worked with gel coat but the repair kits look pretty straight forward to me. I went to the restoration board and there is plenty of good information there. Just wondering if anyone locally has tried this and were you happy with the results? I’m a little concerned about the color matching.

Did you call Rising Sun in Va Beach? He did a whole lot more work then your describing for less then what you posted. He does great work as well.

I tried one of the kits once on the Nitro. Followed the instructions to the letter. It took away the noticable scratches, but it left dull areas that i could never get buffed back out to a gel-coat kind of shine.

If the area happens to be white gelcote, MarineTex is fairly easy to work with and makes a great repair.

Yeah, I like Marine Tex Neil...Used it several times on my Boston Whaler which had a white hull...My Skeeter is red so I'm a little concerned...Guess I'll have to pay the price...

You need to look at my boat. I have a few places that were repaired by the previous owner or a bad pro. You have to look for them. Look at it this way, if you attempt the repair you can always have it redone by Rising Sun later. How much are the materials to fix it? Cheaper than $575 + you won't be without your boat for a month.

That's the same conclusion I came to Brett...

I have heard you can dye the white Marine Tex any color? Not sure how that works though. I have used the Grey MT on the bottom of my boat..easy to use...good results. I too have a new ding on the side and will be using the white myself.
