I have a 2015 Tacoma double cab TRD Off Road 4x4 with the 4.0 V6 and 5 speed auto. No mountains around here and mine tows boat below in my sig with no problem. My trailer has disc brakes so no braking problems.

The resale on the Tacoma is better than Ranger, Frontier, Colorado/Canyon so residual value is better on the Taco.

Lets just say I tow up and down a 3,000 ft grade twice a week. The Tacoma struggles unless of course you just sit in the slow lane at 70 mph. Our interstate speed is 80 mph and if your not doing it you’ll get run over. Thats why I drive a Tundra.

I have a 2016 Taco and a 2021 Tundra. The taco is my corporate vehicle, and its a dog. The gearing is horrible, and its no secret either - all major car publications gave it that same crap review.

    Reliable - absolutely
    Quality - heck yes
    Peppy/Strong - not at all

Well now I'm not sure what I'm going to do. The poor shifting has me concerned a bit. I'm not going to buy a tundra not going to spend 60k for a truck. Several have suggested looking at the ford ranger but that's not going to happen either. May just keep my one ton and drive it till the wheels fall off.

Had a Honda Ridgeline and it pulled my 186 Reata fine but really bogged down on any type of incline. Last mid-size truck I owned and the last. Too many compromises for me right now as I will have had three full-size trucks since.

The poor shifting on the Taco was supposedly addressed years ago. Go drive one. I have owned one 8100 (little truck prior to Tacomas) two Tacomas, and two Tundras. The little trucks will pull a bass boat, but the Taco got weaker when they put the 3.5 in them vs the old 4.0. They average about 5 mpg better than my Tundra. The Ridgeline was almost 6 mpg better. I just missed the room of a full-size truck and went back to a Tundra in 2018.

Over the years I have owned a Ranger, Nissan hardbody, and the Ridgeline. I don’t stick with smaller trucks long term. There really is not a big difference in price. My last Tundra cost me 40K brand new.

Between the little trucks I had a 97 3500 Chevy. That was a beast of a truck that averaged 12 mpg with it without a boat in tow.

A 1 ton diesel pickup will handle those grades. That is why my son in North Salt Lake replaced his Silverado 1500 with 5.3 with a 2022 GMC Denali 3500 Duramax. No problem towing his enclosed trailer with Razor side by side inside now.

Since I live in the flatlands the Tacoma works for me.
