Jay help me with this new voltage regulator please

97 200 pro max. I posted on here the other day about the rpm jumping up and down at idle and low speed. Here it is if you want to refresh your memory.

one of them doesn't have the grey wire hooked up so that's the one that's ok right? the one on the left has the grey wire plugged off with a rubber plug. My main question is, the one i got(seirra) has a piece of paper saying that it grounds through the block not a wire like the factory one. it has a black wire with a round ground connector on it. so I'll just put that between the reg and the head of the bolt that holds it to the engine? here are pics. Thanks Jay!

I may have found the prob....in the pic you can see the wires touching the right bolt on the right reg, that bottom yellow one haas the insulation melted through and the bolt has black on it where it was arcing. It's the yellow wire that goes to the left regulator. So that's the one that's gonna be bad I suppose.

i spliced that wire together and crunk it on the hose and it was idling at 4000 or so... the engine sounded smooth and didn't sound idled up. the rpm on the engine was steady, just the gauge was off. thought maybe the regs were ok since the wire was burned almost all the way through, just a couple strands were in tact. it's about to storm so i had to stop. gonna put the new reg on the left and try that. got a fuel leak i have to deal with on what looks like the fuel pump. on the passenger side of the front of engine. i think it's just where the hose conects to the top of it. gonna throw and new zip tie on it and pull it tight. I can wiggle the hose a bit now.

put one voltage reg on the boat yesterday. I replaced the one that had the burned wire and it's still idling at 3100 rpm... i put the old one back on and put the new one on the opposite side and same thing.... i fixed the fuel line leak at the fuel pump but the inline filter has a small crack and is oozing a tad. that couldnt be causing the tac problem i don't assume? Hope somebody will respond PLEASE!! I have no idea what else could be wrong. I need to get a volt meter on it but not sure how to check it. Guess it needs to be running or can I do it with just the key on?

Make SURE the roller at the cam is free and barley not touching the cam. I had a buddy call last night and his motor ( after changing reeds ) was idle up high I asked him to check the distance of the roller to the cam and he said 1/4" I said OH NO that can't be , later he told me a loose wire had sucked back and got lodged in between the buttery fly blade causing the motor to idle high .......
