    another oil question

I have been totally reworking a 23' proline and I have an 04' 250hp Ram DI motor installed on the boat. The motor has 0 hours on a factory installed new powerhead. So I expect the motor to last me a very long time. My question involves oil and the difference between the HD50 and the HD100. I know you can't change the oil settings on my motor so it will burn the same amount with either oil. The difference in the cost per gal of is from $8-10/gal. So at burn rate of close to 50-1 the oil will add a substanial amount to the cost of running the boat.

Is there any advantage to the HD100 with my motor? I figure using the 50 it will add about .40/gal to the gas cost and the 100 will add about .65/gal

Yes - it will keep you from having to decarb the motor, and carbon is one of the worst things for a motor... Xd100 flows better at cold temps, and if you really are serious about keeping the motor running a long time, it just makes sense to run the best.

Treat your fuel, and don't skimp on oil.. those are the keys for a DI. Check with some BRP dealer in your area about buying in bulk to cut down on costs. Many will fill a jug you provide out of a 55 gallon drum, and you can save some serious dough that way.

XD-50 is a semi-synthetic blend it also has Carb-X added to it to help cut down on the carbon build up in the motor. XD-100 is a full synthetic oil and will not cause carbon build up. In your vintage motor, unused oil is returned to the oil tank via a return line.
With 0 hours on it I hope the installing dealer set your EMM to breakin mode so you will double oil for the first 10 hours.

I have intstalled the motor myself but have not run it and my plan is to take it my dealer to make sure it is set as it should be. Thanks for the tip on setting it for a breakin period. Even though it has a new water pump installed, it has been setting for 3-4 years without being run. Would you reccommend a new impeller or is the material quality enough it will not get hard with no usage?

Will the XD 50 keep the carbon from forming too, or just not let it build up as quickly. On my older carb motors about every two years I would use the Evinrude power tune. IT was amazing how much power the carbon build up would rob from the performance of the motor. I want to keep the carbon from building up as much as I can.

If that is your goal, then I would choose to use the XD100.

DITTO!!! In cold weather I would have problems with oil flow with the xd-50, creating a false no oil alarm, @ 25 hours I changed to xd-100 and never a problem...... Well worth it, and I save by buying in bulk.... Last year I bought a couple gallons from Roland Martins Marina, for 29.50 a gallon in bulk, and they supplied the jug....
