Mercury Break in/ G3 Diagnostic Demand Linear

    Serial Number # 3B102791
    13x24
    1:85:1
    24P Tempest Plus

Recently received my Triton 18 TRX with 200hp Mercury ProXS. Passed the 2 hour break in and when I try to run open throttle for 1 min I am only getting to 4300 rpms and 50mph. Do I need to get past the 10 hour break in to have it checked on the G3 for demand linear or should I take it in now? Prop to pad is 3”in on a 6 inch manual Jack plate. The hotfoot hits the stopper at the 4300 rpm mark. I know them he engine has alot more in it.

You need to get it adjusted now, break in requires WOT runs for short periods

Something is way off. The dealer should have addressed that before you ever took delivery. I would start with the hotfoot stop adjustment.

Also your prop is two sizes too big. You need a 22 tempest.

Make sure the RPM figures are coming from a Smartcraft Instrument (analog instruments are notoriously inaccurate). That being said- those numbers are a believable combination (not an appropriate one, but a believable one).

First place to start is having the Demand Linear and throttle cable (also hotfoot if equipped) checked and verified. You MUST be able to reach 100% demand linear every time the hotfoot or throttle is depressed fully (whether it's fast, slow, up and back down, etc). See the FAQ Section- there's a step-by-step there that may help (keep in mind, some techs would be happy to have it, many may be offended or put-off if you offer it). Either way, that's what needs to happen.

THEN get a suitable propeller. 24P Tempest Plus is going to be too steep for that setup. I agree with Dave- start with a 22P Tempest Plus.

Another vote for a 22 P Tempest Plus or a 24P Bravo FS.

I have both props and they both perform about the same although the Bravo will carry weight better.

Thanks for all the info, all the data provided came from the Vessel View Mobile. Going to bring it up to the dealer to have it tested and will look into getting a different prop.

He has the 1.85 lower not the 1.75TM, and on this rig and engine combo, it is what Triton specify in their standard rigging

Even with the 1.85 it’s too big of a prop.

Tried to upload the data sheet from Triton that’s recommends a 22 Tempest for the 1.75TM and the 24 Tempest for the 1.85 but I can’t get the file to resize small enough

I'm not sure I would agree with that data, even if it's on a "sheet".

1.75R to 1.85R equates to 200-250 RPM increase. 22 to 24 pitch equates to 300-400 RPM decrease.

Net LOSS of RPM's, on an engine that needed to spin MORE RPM's. For my sometimes feeble mind, this does not compute.

Keep the same prop it had at 1.75R for starters, the 1.85R will raise the engine RPM's. THEN see where it's at.

IMPORTANT: ALL of this is in vain if the engine isn't reaching 100% Demand Linear.

Again thanks for all the info. Taking in in next week to get the demand liner checked and verified. Will work on the other items discussed after. Will update when I get the info back.

Dropped it off at the dealer today to get looked at. Said it won’t be until next week when they are able to get it done. He did say they are seeing quite a few Tritons and Rangers coming out of the factory that the hot foot is not setup correctly. Was able to track down a 22 P Tempest Plus to test when I get it back.

Got a call from the dealer and boat is ready. It was only getting 75.2% demand linear when they tested it. It is now at 100% and goes back to zero when the hot foot resets. Going to get it back out on the water this Sat and see what the numbers look like.

Hopefully you meant to say that it is "NOW" at 100%.... if it's really "not" then I wouldn't bother until it's right.

Can’t believe so many dealers send out boats and don’t check for 100% throttle. I really think they don’t check anything, just get them out the door to a customer as fast as possible.

Got out on the water today. Top speed this morning was 65.6 MPH which is when it started walking a little bit. That was also with a 22 P Tempest plus and full tank of fuel. I do need to load everything back in the boat, the front was pretty much empty. Need to learn to drive it but glad I was able to get the demand linear worked out. Will start making adjustments to get it all dialed in. Thanks for all the tips and advise!
