    NC Fishing License

AS of Jan 1 2007 you may need two license to fish in North Carolina ( Inland and Coastal waters). The coastal now is the only license that covers joint waters...Here is a link to the maps... http://ncdmf.net/maps/coastal_inland/index.html
Non-resident license for both is $30.00 so both will run you $60.00 for the year. You may want to look at the map and make sure you are fishing with the right license...

    Re: NC Fishing License (sheeterhdip225)

I'm not understanding this.....The costal is the only license good for the areas marked "joint" now?

If that's the case....why do they call them "joint"?

So as an example....If I'm fishing the Chowan I need a joint license, but if I go up into Bennet Creek I need an Inland license?

    Re: NC Fishing License (sheeterhdip225)

I just copied this off the website where the maps are:

The license is required to recreationally take finfish in the state’s Coastal Fishing Waters, which include sounds, coastal rivers and their tributaries, out to three miles in the ocean. Recreational anglers who catch fish in the Exclusive Economic Zone (3 miles – 200 miles offshore) will be required to have this license to land fish in state waters. Fishing in Joint Waters (areas managed by both the Marine Fisheries and the Wildlife Resources commissions) will require either the CRFL or a WRC inland fishing license.

According to that either license will work. But now if I drop out of the river and into the sound, I'll need the costal. That's just crazy!

You are right Daryll. You have the correct handle on this crazy procedure. It is all about who is going to manage the rock fishery and also to raise revenue. Two agencies fighting who is going to be in control. There were going to make those who hold lifetime license buy the new saltwater license (because of two diff agencies) but they both caught the wrath of NC sportmans and now those who had lifetime are grandfathered in.

so what's the final word on this, do we need to get both or just one ?? we routinly fish pembroke and run across the sound to a few of the creeks over there. does that mean I need both ?? this may end my N/C fishing until it's all resolved.

I've read pretty much the entire website and rules digest. What I get is that if it's got the blue stripes on the map, only a saltwater license will work. If it's got red stripes, either a salt or freshwater will work.

If it doesn't have any stripes, then it's freshwater only.

It is hard to understand, and the info on the website is vague, but the way it was explained to me is like Daryl said, either liscence is valid in the Chowan river, but you do have to have the inland liscence if you go into any of the areas that are marked inland.

You were always supposed to have a coastal or salt water liscence to fish the sound since they came out with those.

It's some crazy stuff I know that. Like Ron said, everybody trying to get a piece of the license fee pie.

Call me crazy, but my personal definition of coastal is from the beach....out.

So, I guess that running across the sound from the Chowan to Salmon creek would mean that I need both liscence's ?? if so, I doubt I'll fish that area anymore.

Yeah, that's like when I'm fishing the VA side of Northwest with a 12" limit....if I want to run to Back Bay or North Landing (both on the VA side) I've got to go through NC where the limit is 14". They love to stop people right near the line and check the livewells.

we were told the chowan is like it has all ways been. you can run the sound to get to salmons creek but if you stop in the sound to fish you will need the other license. you can cross the sound all you want just don't fish with out the coastal license.

I think I would spend the 30 bucks, better than the $175 ticket!!

i was told the edenton bridge was the line and you could run across the sound to and from the line with fish as long as you did not stop to fish past the edenton bridge. so until i hear different i am saving my money and continue to not fish in the sound
