Chick/James River

Going to be on the Chick and James river here in a few weeks. Not looking for any particular fishing information just curious about navigation.

How far of a run is it from the Chick up to Richmond? Is it even doable? How safe is it?

If the weather's good you can get to richmond from the mouth of the Chick in 45 minutes or so, it's very doable and not a big deal unless it's rained recently then the James can be very interesting to drive with debris in the river. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Everybody I have ever talked to acts like you shouldn't do it unless you really know the river. It doesnt look to bad on a map and I'm not trying to break any speed records getting there.

How is boat traffic out there? Any barge traffic or anything like that?

Not sure of barge traffic but with the wrong wind you will be in big water all the way from the chick to almost Rickmond. And it si my understanding there are a couple of hairy areas once you reach the point where the James narrows.

Not sure why you would want to leave the Chick, you are in some of the best fishing on the river right there. I wouldn't waste the gas to run to Richmond.

Ditto on that statement but like OTW said the James can get brutal if the winds are blowing the wrong way.....Had some nice rollers a few years back and you can count on a few in the boat with ya if it is like that.

Not to mention thier are some pretty shallow sand bars out in the river at low tide. If you do it run the channell.

if you do make the run believe theres gonna be something big around each blind turn once you get up here. not only do we have barges but big azz container ships as well and their wakes make no jokes.

ive made that run in an allison as well. blind draw with a douche who picked the boat up two nights before the tx. seen first hand how light those boats are when he hit a barge wake at 40 mph.i wanna say 25 mins but i was too pissed to keep time. no fun.

I dont even know where the river is let alone how to run it or where to fish. Skeet and I will probably prefish several days before.
