98 150 Intruder no oil light and erratic tach..

1998 Evinrude Intruder.


For the past month or so I have been having problems with my No Oil Light and buzzer going off. Some times all day. I have also noticed that my Tach seems to be a little erratic at times but tapping it with my hand makes it go back to normal RPM. The highest voltage reading is 14.7v and sometimes it will spike this high at 1000 rpms but will never go higher even at full throttle.

Could these problems be related to the voltage regulator? Because nothing looks burned or loose...And batterys are connected with SS nuts. Also all the OHM reading checks turned out ok on the regulator. This one has me puzzled.....

May also want to check the stator output.

How do I check the stator output?

Peak reading volt meter. Need to check the output it is AC volts. The symtoms do lean towards the Regulator. Keep in mind that the VRO gets tach pulses too and those are sent via the regulator.

Yellow to GND 8.2v
Yellow w/gray tr 12v to GND

Together 20.2 VAC

The no oil light came on again the other day...So I unplugged the 6 pin harness from the back of the tach....The light stayed on....Does this point to a possible bad tach? ( This was while the motor was not running by the way.)

Bad system check part of the tach. Check that the analog side isn't hooked up Purple, gray and black wires on the posts. Black is OK as that is ground.

Yes...The analog side of tach is hooked up to all the posts....What does this mean?

Bad gauge/tach. If it is a Faria brand it carries a lifetime warranty. OMC/BRP one year.

Can I get by with just buying the system check gauge or do I need to replace the Whole tach?

You can just use a gauge and leave the analog side hooked up. Disconnect the plug and try running it and see how the tach responds. What color face is it? I have one in black that I could part with.
