    Flu shots

Ive been sick as a dog lately and it coincided with my flu shot that I received from Sewell's Point Med last Monday. I know that the vaccine is not a live virus and that it shouldnt make you sick but damn...this has happened more than once. Anybody else get sick from this shot?...

You are correct in that the flu shot cannot give you the flu. what symptoms are you experiencing? I have immunized over 400 people this year without any complaints of illness (we try to followup on all of our vaccinees) Sounds like just dumb luck, but you never know. Do you feel ill after any other vaccines?

I've heard of a quite a few people getting sick post flu vaccines over the years. I take my chances, never get the shot. Been lucky so far.

I don't know if it is still the case, but used to be the process for creating the vaccine involved eggs...My Mom was allergic to eggs and got really sick from a shot and had to quit taking them. I am with Greg, I take my chances and do not get the injection.

Headaches could also be caused by hypotension. Are you feeling dizzy as well? How's your BP?

    Re: Flu shots (Lea)

Lea is correct, the flu vaccine is still manufactured via using eggs to incubate the vaccine. Also allergies to yeast and latex (depending on brand) can be contraindications

    Re: Flu shots (emawyer)

The problem with flu shots is that they are made using strains from last years flu. To me this is not good because influenza virus is one of the most adaptable viruses there are and it changes year to year. When I get a flu shot I get sick after 2 days and if I don't get it I don't get the flu that year. My father is the same way and so are my 2 brothers and my mom.

You're correct in that flu virus are highly adaptable. Every April the World Health Organization (not the WHO of 1970 fame) do have to predict which 3 strains will be the most virulent in order to make the vaccine for the upcoming fall. Not really "last years" but close. And their predictions can always be off. If you don't mind the risk of suffering the flu, most of you really don't have to have it. Obviously the physically weaker should get it however. The ramifications of the flu can be lethal to the elderly.
