    Jerk Bait

When and where to use? What time of year? Shallow or deep water?

    Re: Jerk Bait (JonBoat14)

For me it's very early spring and in the winter, anywhere from 4-15ft, and I always opt for a suspending bait. I like em near steep drops with some forn of cover for the fish to suspend on.

Others prolly have much more insight than myself as I don't use these baits this often even though I just bought 28 from Pete

i like the susspending ones to you can cover just about any depth you want most say spring or late fall into winter but i have used at other times in 2-5 range just dont be consitant withe the retrieve as the name implys slash it jerk it stop it crank it there are no limits i like the ones with feather hook but others will work i just don't rely upon it that much but when all else fails hey see it they want it. jsut remember it is a reaction type of bait you are trying to get them to hit it for spite

    Re: Jerk Bait (JonBoat14)

I like to use them a little pre-spawn at the lake, but I don't depend on them allot. I'll throw them shallow and work them out trying to find suspended fish that are just starting to come up and feed. If I don't get any intrest after 20 or so casts they go back in the box for the rest of the day.

Pre-spawn works best for me. I use both deeper diving and shallow divers...suspending ones...I experiment with both till I find which one they want...

I like both the Team Daiwa ones and the Rapala X-raps....

    Re: Jerk Bait (JonBoat14)

One of my favorite baits. I specifically like the Pointer 78's, there is a ghost shad color and a blue back shad color. One is obvious, the other I am thinking about is a light light yellow/transparent color. I like the blue black color better, because it mimics the shad in High Rock.

I use it year round. It works better, IMO, in clearer water. The only thing I change between 45 degree water and 85 degree water is how hard/often I pop it. In the cold I let it sit sometimes for a minute, usually pop it gently. In the warm I sometimes crank it slowly jut like a crankbait, let it just barely swim along, sometimes I pop it about 2-3 times a second (more aggressively in the summer).

It is imperative to have it suspend. So that's why I like Pointers. They are right when you open the box. The others tend to float up, or sink, usually at a very unnatural attitude. You use lots of lead tape with cheaper lures.

I use a moderatley flexible 6'6" baitcaster, nice reel, 20# braid with a 12# florocarbon leader. I fish it normally in 6 feet or less. When you come by in December (I'm booked till then) I will give you first hand experience with it.
