Actually, there is much less smell now. The reason behind that is about ten years ago, Union Camp invented and began using a new bleaching technology where they went from a chlorine bleaching process for the pulp, to an ozone based bleaching process. The new process resulted in a much lower amount of sulphur being produced as a by-product, and that is why most have noticed a significant reduction in the traditional odor of the mill. They were also smart enough to patent the process when they went on line with it. International Paper bought the patent at the same time they bought the Franklin mill from Union Camp. The technology was what made that such a desireable mill, as now they can use that process at all of their facilities.
