SHO 250 holding position when trimmed up fishing?

I just bought a new boat (year old) with a 250 SHO. When I fish shallow and trim the motor up out of the water I noticed after about 10 minutes it starts to creep back down into the water. The last boat I had was a 200 vmax and I don’t recall having that issue. Is this normal? My first thought is that I am low on trim fluid or have a busted seal or something?

It Trims up and down just fine, not slow or lagging and when running it trims just fine up and down.

It is not normal...More then likely trim unit needs to be replaced. A Large Yamaha dealer I talked to the other day said that Yamaha was having problems with trim units. See your dealer. I had mine replaced under warranty as well.

You should not have this issue.

My 2016 250 SHO had the trim unit rebuilt 2 times, and then replaced the 3rd time it did this.
    Unfortunately it's a common issue.

I had the same issue. Tightening the manual lowering/tilt screw fixed it.

I agree with those that recommended tightening the manual screw. They have to be fairly tight if I remember correctly. I used a wrench on a screwdriver on mine. If that is not your issue, then it is something internal and would require further troubleshooting. It could be as easy as a the seal between the piston and the cylinder. A shop will automatically replace the tilt/trim units most of the time because of the time it takes for a tech to tear into it, trouble shoot it, repair it, and reassemble it make it more expensive than the easy swap out of a full tilt/trim unit. With your boat being so new (I assume under warranty), I would let Yamaha take care of it though.

Agree, but the out of pocket is much less to repair, rather than replace the unit. I think the unit itself costs over $1,000 (I think), which is why trim unit was rebuilt twice.

for sure, parts are usually cheap. If you can find a shop willing that doesn’t kill you on labor or someone that specializes in rebuilds it definitely is worth repairing.

After you have trimmed/tilted the motor up have you tried to bump it back down a skosh to see if it then holds? At times that might work.

So, I triple checked and loosened/retightened the manual trim screw and made sure it was tight. Still the same issue. However, I noticed one other thing...

When running down the lake (60-70 mph), I noticed that it won't let me trim the motor up past a certain point. Like, I can't shoot a rooster tail if I wanted to. The trim stops before I can do that. But, while the motor isn't running, or I'm running slow I can trim it up and down as far as I want. Is there some sort of trim limiter associated with rpm or something? OR, is this related to my initial issue?

Surely its something simple and not a whole damn power trim/tilt assembly that needs to be fixed...

The motor will only trim up so high once the throttle/rpm is at a certain value, not related to your creep issue

ahhh gotcha....I know I'm pushing 6000 rpm when i have my jackplate and trim at that sweet spot...i figured it may be related to that...i'm also running a mercury bravo 1 4 blade prop...

To me, it sounds like a bad check in the valve body or a bad manual release seal. There would need to be too many bad piston seals all at once to cause a leak down.

after research and talking to a couple guys, this seems to be what they think as well...

I tried tightening the manual release seal the best I could...I guess I could buy a new screw and just try first???

That would be the cheapest and probably quickest test. Just make sure all pressure is off the system when you unscrew the nut. I would recommend taking it off your boat and laying it on its side when you go to take it out to minimize fluid loss. I hated having to bleed my system.

Contact your dealer. My 2019 250 SHO started doing the exact same thing about a month ago. I called my dealer about this problem and they said there is a defect causing this issue with this trim unit. I am number 4 right now on their list to have the unit replaced under warranty but at this time Yamaha has no stock. They are contacting me as soon as it’s available. By the way, I did try tightening the manual trim release screw and it didn’t help. I put a sharpie dot on the piston rod and the rod still drops about 1/4” every minute. Not a good time for this to happen either because I keep having to trim it up from the bow to keep it the skeg off of the bottom and it’s spooking bedding fish.

Same issue here as well. New parts were supposed to be released in March but nothing so far.
