    The XR4 runs

Spent a little time on the XR4 & got it running today, sounds pretty healthy too. Gotta run to NAPA, hose leaks galore. Smoking pretty good but I expected that cuz I'm running it oil rich for now (about 40:1), wanna get things lubed up.

Not getting any water out the tell tail, pulled the hose & getting air movement & exhaust smoke from it. Maybe being held back by the thermostats. I haven't run it long enough to get it hot yet. Taking baby steps...

Cowling should be here Monday or Tuesday

    Re: The XR4 runs (pYr8)

Just a little info Karl. In 1988 I ran a 1987 Cajun Paul Ellis Edition with a 1988 Mercury 150 XR4. The XR4 has a 115 lower unit. It came with a 22p Laser II prop. It had been setup by Mercury for one of thier pro's that ended up going with an XR2 instead. I ended up with that motor. That was the only prop I could run on that motor. I had a different prop company as a sponsor and every prop I tried from them ended up blowing that lower unit. The XR4 actually pulls 185 horses. Just alittle info for ya bud.

    Re: The XR4 runs (Skip)

    Thanks for the info Skip
I've heard the XR4 gear cases were smaller, less inertia was the thought I guess. I hope this one doesn't blow up but if it does I may go with a Bob's LU or regear a merc 200 LU. There's a 24p Laser II mounted now & that was pushing 16' 9" 1125 lb hull.
Not surprised about 185HP, a 2.4L motor could prolly support 225, yeah?

Ran it some more, enough to get fairly hot. No water from the thermostats. Gonna drop the LU soon, haul it's azz over to Chucks for a welding / beer drinking session, then& replace the water pump assy. See what happens after that...

Gonna do what I can to keep up with you big boat, big motor sumguns

impeller will fix you up.. Jerry can change one in about 5 minutes. Don't ask how I know. Troy always carries a extra gallon of oil. Again don't ask.
