    Evinrude lower unit

I have a '95 Evinrude Intruder 175 hp. I may need a lower unit and was wondering what years would work. A guy at a boat dealer said he had a 99 fitch 200 or 225 hp unit that would work, is that right? Also I've asked on here before about gear ratio's and was told that there all about the same. This guy say's some are different. Just asking because I don't know either way.

Both have the 1.86:1 ratio. You will need to move your drive shaft and shift rod to the new case. Would be a good time to add a new water pump.

Just got a new water pump at the end of last year. I think I'll try and get new parts and fix mine though.

Hope you have the jig for checking spacers for the lower drive shaft. Just can't slap gears on it and go. You need to check the shimming.

It's got to be like setting up a rear-end. I've found that most thing's that everyone is scared of doing really isn't all that hard as long as you have tool's and a manual.

That is what ChampNion man is saying. The jig for setting the gear lash is very expensive. Might be cheaper to send it to gearcaseman fo repairs.

Eddie is in Charleston, down near Chattanooga - take a day trip down and see him. You won't be disappointed, trust me.

Re: Evinrude lower unit (Tom G.)

I may have hit something last year, cause there is a crack by the skeg and all the gear oil has been replaced with water. Talked to the ins. guy today and I may be able to turn it in on the ins.

You can get some good prices on new aftermarket units with Warranty. OBR and SEI both sell products that should work on your motor. Try SEI at http://www.sterndrive.cc/mm5/m...SE306 and OBR at http://www.obrparts.com/ . I just put a SEI unit on my V4 Johnson and it seems to be ok. 3 yr warrant to boot.

Yeah it sure is thickening! I checked under my boat and there are 3 or 4 small chips and some still have water seeping out of them and its been over 2 week's since I've been to the lake.

    Re: Evinrude lower unit (big_o_tom)

What happened was the seal went bad last year, I think, and and let the oil drain out and let water back in. Then this past winter when it froze, it pushed the bearing housing out which caused one of the two bolt's that keep the housing from turning to break the lower unit case. Got it all fixed and put it on and everything was working good then I noticed two carb's pouring out gas! Took them off and adjusted the float's, that fixed the leak but now I think there must be some of the sealant that is used to hold the o-ring seal in place clogging up the carb's. If it ain't one thing, it's ten!
