    2002 250 DI/Ficht Overheat

    2002 250HP DI/Ficht

took the boat out about a month ago and ran it for about 15 minutes and got an over heat warning. shut motor off and waited and the alarm went way until I was pulling back into the dock, and then the alarm sounded again. had good water pressure according to gauge

Went ahead and changed out the thermostats and impellar. impellar definetly looked mishaped and had problably lost some of its "spring". seemed to fix problem as i ran boat for about 4 hours or so with no issues. then coming back in the alarm sounded as soon as I came off throttle. shut motor down again and waited. alarm went away and seemed fine for the next 5 days of using it every day.

last day of vacation and taking boat back to the dock to put on trailer and overheat alarm sounds again, but this time letting it sit didnt seem to help. alarm came on very quickly after waiting.

was leaning towards maybe a faulty sensor. Any thoughts or direction is appreciated

Then you might temporarily hook up a water pressure gauge and a laptop with the diagnostic software and run the motor while monitoring the information. Use the "flight recorder" part of the software to watch the temps while running at various speeds.

Did you only replace the impeller or install the complete factory water pump kit #5001595?

the "pisser" is installed in the back of the engine, right?

    Ok, thanks!

yes, the pisser is installed. Only did the impellar, not the complete kit. I will hook up to laptop and see what I can figure out.

laptop will only show temp on the port cylinder head, use an infrared temp gun for the stb. side.

Ok, I will shoot it with the temp gun.

Unsure if I can replicate the alarm in the driveway or if I need to run it in the water.

    ok,

Finally got to test everything out.

engine overheated about 5 mins after start. Shot it with gun and Stbd cylinder ehad seemed to be hot. ABout 155 with the temp gun in the middle and 140+- on rest of cylinder head. other side seemed normal around 130 +-. took out stbd termostat and found a very small piece of seaweed in the hole inside plastic thermostat cap. Cleaned everythinng reinstalled and got alarm again after a few minutes. Shot it with the gun and everything seemed normal this time , around 125-130 but the alarm is still sounding

pulled the other thermostat. One very small piece of seaweed was in cap. Maybe about half the size of a small blade of grass. .

    Re: 2002 250 DI/Ficht Overheat (jeffro22)

still getting alarm after about an 5-10 minutes of running the motor. Temps all seem normal now with heat gun. everything is in the 128-138 temp range on both sides of the cylinder heads. ANyt thoughts?/ leaning towards the temp switch.

Replaced the temp switch on the Port side with a used one I had. the wiring plug had the rubber boot pinched and the connection looked alittle corroded. cleaned it up and replaced the boot and switch. Ran motor for about 10 mins with no alaram but the STBD side head was reading around 155-158 temp . this was middle cylinder right in front of the injector close to the temp switch location. thought that seemed hot so I shut it down .

    2 questions...

what should the temp be reading with a heat gun at idle on the hose (with the etec thermostats)?

is the temp sensor off a 2000 3.0l ficht the same as a 2002 3.3l. the connection, threads and appearance all seem the same..

You cannot troubleshoot an overheating problem on a garden hose, put the boat in the water and follow the service manual procedure.

For the temp sensors, look up the part numbers at http://www.shop.evinrude.com and see if they are the same.

    Re: 2002 250 DI/Ficht Overheat (SEAHORSE)

Thanks, I realize what you are saying about being on the water. however, it was giving the overheat alarm after about 5 minutes of running it in the driveway. its a decent amount of trouble to get this in the water, so i wanted to try a few things first.

Anyway, the connection on the sensor looked bad, and I am pretty sure by cleaning the connection, and getting a new seal/boot and replacing the sensor the problem has been fixed. going to take to water today or tomorrow to test.

What temps should I see with the heat gun running the etec themos?

    thanks again

    Re: 2002 250 DI/Ficht Overheat (jeffro22)

look for 130° or higher on the top of each cylinder head. If you have the diagnostic software, it will read out the temp of the port head.

If the temp is low, then pinch off both hoses to the blow off valve and see if the temp comes up. the seat in the valve may have to be glued in place, use Loctite 380 adhesive for best results.

I seem to be getting 130 or so around the t stats.. I am getting a reading of close to 158 160 in front of the #3 injector on the stbd cylinder head. Anything to be worried about? most temps throughout the heads seem to be in the 140 range

You are fine, don't worry about the other areas of the motor as there is different water flow and metal surface temps.

    Re: 2002 250 DI/Ficht Overheat (SEAHORSE)

motor ran great today and temp all seemed good. Turned out to be the wiring going into the sensor on the port side was corroded from a bad connection. thanks for the help!

the new etec t stats seem to be helping plugs out alot also. pulled them all and regapped but they are lastign alot longer than they used too
