Nitro Z7 150 Optimax Over Propped?
Bought a new boat to me. It has a 2008 150 Optimax. Bought this boat out of Dallas Texas area. The motor report shows 105 hours, nothing over 4800 rpm. After picking up the boat, ran it to a lake that was 4000 ft in altitude, and boat struggled to get on plane. It currently has a 23p tempest plus (no holes plugged and didnt have any plugs at the time). Off mercury's website, it says I should be running a 19p on this setup. Did manage to get the boat on plane 3-4 times and it ran good and fast but only was turning 4800 rpm max. When i trimmed up and started chasing rpm's, I managed to hit 5000 but started porpoising like crazy. I am thinking I am way over propped, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience running props with this setup at altitude and what prop they were running. Boat is 19ft (roughly), weight is 1400lbs dry, and no jackplate (yet, not sure when i will be adding one exactly). I am looking for much better hole shot, and then I can work on the porpoising issue later if need be. I think the porpoising happened from trimming up way too much trying to get better RPM. Other issue was that when I mashed on the throttle it would only turn 2900-3000 rpm, the few times it hit 3200-3300 is when it did finally jump up on pad and get scootin. Thanks for the replies in advance. Plan on getting this all set up and going by next spring. Not in too too much of a hurry, just want to try and set it up correctly by next year. I do understand that the porpoising issue could be related to motor height and prop to pad measurements. I honestly could not tell you at this time where we are at but I want to walk before I run and trying to take baby steps when setting this boat up.

Test a 19P Tempest Plus or 17P Rev4

Will do. Thats kind of what I was thinking I needed to do. There are lakes that I fish that are 7000 feet in altitude. May need a 17p to run at that altitude or do you think the 19p will be suffice from the 4000 to 7000 range?

I'd be guessing... The Rev4 17 would be worth a test.
