    Midland Odessa area

Alright, I have already asked a few folks this question. Looking at a possible move to the Midland Odessa area. Looking for opinions on this area. Like it? Love it? Hate it? Pros? Cons? I know that there is not much in this area and is flat and featureless. I guess I am more concerned with weather, cllimate, schools, family safety.. ect. Thanks for your help in advance boys and girls!!

Beautiful country with lots of trees and hills. Some of the best fishing lakes in the southwest too. It also smells like a pine forest out there too due to all the trees.

    Re: Midland Odessa area (JD#5)

JD I have been here 22 years and I guess its now home and wont leave.

Years like this one with no rain and lots of wind make you want to leave but its not always like this.

A few good things about this area is this.

    1. If your willing to work you can always find a good job.

    2. Its only 2.5 hrs from Ivie and 3.5 hrs from Amistad.

    3. There is very good deer hunting out here.

    4. Close to Ruidoso NM for Sking, gambling and the horse race.

    5. Good hunting in NM also.

    6. Not much humidity

    7. Mild winters

    8. Great folks

    A few bad things

    1. Its Hot and Dry

    2. Its not pretty

    3. The sand blows at times.

    4. The wind blows alot.

    5. Ivie and Amistad are the closest lakes that are considered great fisheries.

I live in the suburb of Midland called Greenwood, the school is ok, used to be an awesome school.

As far a safe. I would say as safe as or safer than most places.

I would echo Jeff's comments. One has to be from the High Plains of TX to really appreciate it. It's not the prettyest part of the state, but has some of the prettest sun sets you'll ever see. I would opt for the Midland area rather than Odessa though ... puts you 30 mi closer to Ivie and Amistad ...

This head has been through its fair share of burns...Cozumel supplied me with a new fishing hat that doubles as a lawn mowing hat...

There is an old saying about living in Midland/Odessa: Stay long enough to wear out a pair of boots and you will never leave.

Midland / Odessa is kind of like Lubbock. I've known a lot of people that have been transferred there who swore they would get out of town as soon as they could. Most if not all are still there if they had a choice.

    Re: Midland Odessa area (basspastor)

I've lived in Odessa a couple of times in my adult life. Moved there when I first got out of college, and my wife to be threatened not to get married because she wouldn't move to that hell hole. She broke down and went with me anyway and after a couple of years I thought I was gonna have to drag her out of there. Great people, good school system, and big enough towns to have everything you need.

    Re: Midland Odessa area (katyag)

Hey bro, Ive been here for 10 years now and I grew up in South Louisiana and then Bay City TX so I know your area well! I say do it, I think its the best place Ive ever lived and I spent a few years in Waco and in Oklahoma. I did like Waco too, its pretty nice.
I live in Midland, and if I were you I would live in Midland as well, nothing against Odessa people but there is a lot more riff raff going on in Odessa than in Midland. Midland had its first murder the other day in like 10 years, if that tells you anything.
As far as school, you will not find better public schools in the state outside of a few in DFW and a select group of smaller cities, most of them being in the past of the state. This is a very affluent part of TX so money is spent on the kids, its really great to know your kids are getting a great education you dont have to pay for. There is not as much disruption in the class rooms as I went through when I was a kid. I wont go into that on here but if you wanna call I can tell you how I feel
It is ugly and the lakes are far away but its worth it, I really like Oak Creek and its 120 miles from my front door so not bad. Its hot, but its dry and you will like not sweating all the time, at least I sure do. When I go east not I hate it unless Im going to T Bend fishing
If you get serious about it give me a holler man, 432-638-9830
