    Primer solenoid not getting power

1995 88hp. What would cause the primer solenoid to not get power when the key is turned? The solenoid works, but the purple wire does not get hot?

    Thanks

Purple wire is switched B+ 12V. That means the rectifier may be toast. Power is supplied to the recitifier via the +12 V from the solenoid. The post on the solenoid also has +12V from the battery attached to it.

If the rectifier is toast, does that mean that it wouldn't charge the battery either?

    Thanks

Correct and the tach may not work either.

The primer solenoid uses a purple wire with a white stripe on it. It is only activated with 12 volts when the key is pushed in to "choke" a cold motor. If there is no voltage at the primer solenoid itself, then a wire, keyswitch, or connector is faulty.

The solid purple wire has NO meaning to the primer. That is a completely different circuit.

I had the primer wired wrong.

Its not charging, and the tach isn't working. Does that mean the rectifier is out?

    Thanks

Unfortunately that sounds like it. Look at it for melted plastic....

I replaced the rectifier, and the tach started working, but it quit after about a minute, and I could see smoke behind the glass.

Is it possible that I switched the yellow wires coming from the stater and fried the tach? I have the yellow with the grey stripe connected the the jumper with the grey wire from the harness (tach feed?) and one of the yellow rectifier wires, and the solid yellow wire from the stater connected to one of the yellow wires from the rectifier.

Or did the tach just go out because it hasn't been working for a while?

My stater is also only putting out 14 amps, so I think its going out also?

    Thanks again for the help.

That is quite a feat for a 6-9 amp charging system on an 88hp.

sounds like I should check it again. I'm not good with electrical.

    Thanks
