Sean Swank of De Berry hauled in a giant bass Friday, March 18 in Caddo Lake near the Louisiana border.
The big bass weighed 16.07 pounds, making it the largest bass caught in the state so far this year.
Swank was fishing with a jig in four feet of water when the big female struck.
She was 27 inches long and had a 22.75-inch girth.
When Texas Parks and Wildlife officials arrived to transport the fish to Athens, they said hello to an old friend.
According to Angie King, tour boat operator from Johnson’s Ranch Marina where the fish was weighed, the bass had been caught one year ago and sent to Athens.
Officials implanted a microchip in the bass and were able to identify the big fish, which was caught in a similar part of the lake.
The fish will be taken to Athens for breeding and released back into Caddo Lake for the next person to catch this fish.
Last year, the fish weighed 16.17 pounds and was caught by Keith Burns of Jefferson on March 20, 2010.
