wish somebody would answer my question

I posted a question a couple days ago, but nobody has reponded. Surely somebody on here has more knowledge than me. Will the contols that were on a '93 Evinrude 120 hook up to an '82 115? The control cables will work I'm sure, and they are both red plug motors, so i don't think that should be a problem, but the real question is will the trim button on the control work on the 115? There is a 5 wire harness (blue, red, green, brown, and white) that plugs into a plug on the motor with the 120. The 115 is only 3 wires (red, green, blue) coming from the pump.

Man I don't know but can't you trial and errow it by just trying the trim control without hooking all the rest up, just a fast rig to see if it will work.

that's what I was thinking championman...the 2 others for the trim gauge...but the boat that the 115 is on has a trim gauge also. guess I'm just gonna have to trace every wire all the way to wherever it goes and see what's what. might be easier to just swap controls than trace wires for 2-3 hours...LOL

The trim design of the early 80's had a 3 wire connection and a relay box. The '93 has a 2 wire design with the box eliminated. I believe the factory made an adapter for this if I'm not mistaken. You may want to check with your local dealer on this.

Re: wish somebody would answer my question (gearcaseman)

well...when looking at what I got...the '82 115 has 2 wires coming out of the trim motor...a blue and a green (same as my '93 120)...the 115 has a relay box in the bilge area that has power coming into it from the battery and 5 wires coming from the control box/trim switch. The '93 120 also has 5 wires coming from the control box/trim switch that connects to a relay box that is mounted on the engine itself. There are 2 red wires coming out of the main harness that I assume power the relay box instead of coming straight from the battery on the 115. I guess the real question is will the relay box on the 120 work on the 115. Could it be wired up to work?

Yes it will work I did this same change from an 86 model to a 95 year model. You will have to remove the main harness going to your relays in the bilge and wire them to your new motor. Basical doing away with the relays in the bilge. One of the five wires coming from the motor is hot this powers ur trim now. Two of the ones coming from the motor connect to the trim up and down switch and the other two connect to ur trim gauge. Hopes this helps

so the 2 red wires that come out of the main harness of the 120 do what? they come out of the main harness and go to the relay box. I assumed they powered the relay box...maybe not.

Re: wish somebody would answer my question (mtbdsavage)

The relay box in your bilge has two harness one going from your controls and one going out to your old motor. You have to get the harnes coming from your boat. It will connect directly to the harness of your new motor. If you font bypass the relay box in your bilge you will have power going to to many things at once and will blow the fuse on the back of your motor. Your new motor has the relays on it already they are slot smaller and towards the front starboard side

Re: wish somebody would answer my question (Cclutter1)

I think you got my motors reversed...I am replacing the '93 120 with an '82 115. The '93 120 has the relay box on the motor...the '82 115 has the relay box in the bilge area. I still have my blown up '93 120 and was gonna use the relay box from it as it is much cleaner than the box that is with the '82 115. The trim currently works on the 115, but the box has some rust on a few of the contacts. The relay on the 120 is clean as new and woudl prefer to use it.

Wow ya I had that backwards. I'm not sure I saved the old relay box in case I had to go back the way your fixin to do. I don't know if all the wires are on the older engine to power that relay set up off the new engine. Sorry about that.

no problem...appreciate your response...I may just go with the way it's setup now and use the box that is with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it I guess.
