    FALCON Lake ?????????

I was wondering if anyone can give me any suggestions on Falcon ??? I have watched show after show and huge fish after huge fish, and was wondering if anyone can help a fellow bbc'er out on any info ?? I will be down there for the first time in June and I HAVE NO CLUE where to go, what to throw, and any hazards that are on the lake, out side of having an arm brace, when those pigs go to breaking your arm I heard the hotter it gets, the better the fishing gets in the deep water AND I"M NO DEEP WATER FISHERMAN BY ANY MEANS.... Thank you to any and all information in advance...

    Triton,

The wind should die by then, allowing you to fish the whole lake. Be cautious of the Mexican side right now. Run the river when you can, to stay out of trouble. Just follow your GPS. Try out many of the long points and humps in 6-15 foot of water with a carolina rig. If you feel rock, you'll catch fish, especially if the spot is near a sharp drop-off. I have found that spots cool off after a few fish, so move around a lot, but always go back to a good spot.

You can follow me to some spots if you let me know when you'll be there. I go to Falcon almost every weekend. I better not tell you too much on this board, I'll get ripped! HINT - long points and humps in the Tigers arm have been good for me lately. Another hint - if you want to fish that part of the lake and it is going to be windy, be sure to launch at the state park or at the private ramp in big tiger. If you are picky, avoid the big tiger "ramp". You will be launching off of a mud bank.

Thats is great advise right there. The man is willing to show some spots. It don't get much better than that. to Lasalle155. His kind of people make the Texas Forum a great place to kick your feet up and visit.

Where do you plan on staying at in Zapata? Also, if you plan on eating a meal I would suggest ordering it the day before, those folks don't get in a hurry in their cooking.

This being your first trip and all, and even if it wasn't, for now stick to the US side of the lake ~ I not only guide there but have fished it for over 20 yrs and that would be my recommendation ~ there is tremendous unrest on the Mexico side of the border at the moment.

Debra is right there have been a couple of armed robberys lately on the lake on mex side. I have my mex license but wont be using it any time in near future, also I would have a GPS with maps if it gets foggy it is easy to get lost if you dont have one.Good Luck Bill.

Sounds like i may have to carry a dang gun !! Geez, i wasnt aware all that was going on down there, it's not on our news up here. What are Texas laws about gun possession in boats and vehicles, just want to have some protection if i'm possibly going to need it, should something happen and i get in a bind.

    Re: FALCON Lake ????????? (Stompy)

I have heard automatic gunfire from the Mexican side, in the vacinity of the Coyotes. I have seen a helicopter flying back and forth for hours between the Benavides and the Salinillas. Personally, I have had no problems, but it has been too windy for me to fish the Mexican side lately. Yesterday I fished, only on the American side, but glanced "longinly" over towards the Coyote area, were I know some good spots. My better judgement won, and I stayed home. (and caught a 9-15). Plenty of good spots on the U.S. side, though it can be a bit crowded at times...

Good solid advice here. DO NOT CARRY a weapon in International waters,,ie Mexico. Take lasalle up on his offer. Texas BBC folks are hard to beat and eager to help.

    Re: FALCON Lake ????????? (SkeeterBob)

I just wanted to be able to halfway defend myself should i have any issues, even though i would stay away from Mexico waters, thats all !! Any advice on lure selection and colors to have in my boat for first week of june, any advice on water and weather conditions, etc..... Like i said, i have never seen anything more of falcon than what they put on tv from time to time. I will gladly take Lasalle up on his offer, which is why i love BBC. Any advice or help would be great guys/gals !! THANK YOU

    Re: FALCON Lake ????????? (BADAZZTRITON)

    Triton,

Email me when your plans are secure, and I'll try to show you around while you are there! Get a good map NOW and start studying it. Get a navionics chip NOW and start studying it. Half the battle is won before you even reach the lake. It is 80,000 acres in size, runs north to south, and there's about 24 miles of water between Zapata and the dam, where the state park is. I prefer fishing the Mexican side, but not right now, because I am no dummy. I'll let things cool off.

Get brush hogs, lizards (big ones), DD22's and 17's, and some spinnerbaits, and go get em! The water should be nice and clear unless it has rained, and you will be protected to some extent from a SE wind, (the prevailing wind here), all along the U.S. side. Even the U.S. side can have big waves in a 20-25 mph. wind, so be careful! Look for rocky secondary points and main lake points that stay shallow and extend out into the lake. Find a rocky spot on these and you have a gold mine...think 10-15 feet deep. (or you can flip bushes all day and catch a few)

    Re: FALCON Lake ????????? (DChamp)

On the wind issue this is serious. I went down there a few weeks ago and the wind was around 20+ and I laucnhed at County ramp. I though I could make it to Tigris, but I had to turn around WAAAYYY to rough. I took a few good ones over the bow and I fish out of a 21' Triton. If its windy lauch kinda close to where you wanna fish..
One good note it did force me to fish some new water and man did I find a couple more good spots!

Don't even get caught with a bullet in the boat. Just as bad and you won't like the outcome. Best to follow Debra's advice and stay out of Mexico at this time.
