    Vro2 replacement question

I have a 1989 Johnson 150 (J150stlcem) Due to problems created by ethanol Ive had to do work on my carbs and now will be replacing the Vro2 fuel pump. I have located a replacement on ishopmarine that is a decent price. My question is how will I know I am getting the newest replacement fuel pump that was made to address the changes in the ethanol and not old stock? Is there a part number that dictates the newer part. The price difference from this dealer and my local marine shop is significant.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

    Re: Vro2 replacement question (DoferGofer)

Thank you. It will give me ammo to second guess my decision to change the VRO. Im 70 percent sure I arrived at the right conclusion to change it based on info I picked up over the last 2 years researching the problems I had. My symptoms showed up on a tech forum board and the diagnosis of my symptoms was that internal rubber/plastic parts of the pump had been distorted by the ethanol. My plastic carb bowls actually warped to the extent the warp could be seen visually without a straight edge. So in my mind the fuel pump having issues due to ethanol wasnt a stretch. (The boat sat except for a couple trips a year for nearly 8 years prior to me buying it as the owner had a serious illness.) There were other problems such as the primer leaking gas also. After dealing with the carbs and primer I never had the shift linkage and carbs synched. I wasnt able to run the motor with the linkage wrong after starting it so it was not run all of last season. I didnt have the cash to bring it to a shop to have the correct adjustments done professionally. Thats when I did more research and arrived at the decision to change the VRO. I figured Id swap the VRO and then do the adjustments. If I dont swap it and it is necesary to replace it I may have to pay to have it worked on twice by the shop.

Part number 5007420 is the latest most up to date part number. Your carb bowls can be removed and sanded flat by putting down a sheet of 600 grit sand paper on a flat surface and lap them in a figure eight pattern. Check them with a straight edge across two surfaces. Bowl warpage is usually from overtightnening the bowls after a carb rebuild. If you order from Ishop you will get the latest part number in the BRP system which is the 5007420. If your are going to order from them and want to save even more money order the 5007423 VRO which is the same VRO pump but is an upgrade kit for the old style 3 wire system. The VRO is a 4 wire but they give you a purple wire to add to the engine harness and a new 4 pin connector. Order 3 new carb float gaskets. If you have to order new bowls have some Nitro ready.

    Re: Vro2 replacement question (316jughead)

Thanks for the help 316. The price is a little better at boats.net. Champion the motor had such low hours on it when I bought the boat I dont think it ever had a wrench on it. I replaced the bowls with alcohol resistant metal ones.

There is about a 50/50 sucess rate on a rebuild. You have to follow the instructions to a T and get the complete kit.

Thanks again Champion. I feel like Im stealing from you. The BBC sites should have a St Judes drop box where every time I get free information I can make a small donation. Im serious about that. You dont know how frustrating my financial sityuation has been for me the last 2 years since the economy died in my trade. I have a beautiful Ranger boat thats sat for 2 seasons except for small water tournaments that I was able to use the trolling motor. I havent had the cash to have it brought in to be fixed. Right now it looks like Ill have a window of cash flow to get the fix done. If I get the boat to a dealer is there a vaccum test they can perform to check the VRO gas side? The oil side has been disabled.

No problem. Im old school enough to remember the way things were before internet. When my car or wagon needed a fix I had to get my mechanic friend to come to the house. Get him half drunk, feed him a steak dinner and then wrestle with him after his advances on my wife. Plus pay him for his time. I appreciate the way things are now much more.

Been stuck in the Wethersfield cove area since 1970. Small world. I stopped at the Lake Hartwell reststop on 85 coming home from Atlanta a few years back.
