    05 Johnson 150 - Mystery clunking/banging noise...

I have an 05 Johnson 150 carbed motor and over the last year it has developed a clunking/banging noise coming from I believe the engine. I'll describe as best I can. First, I can't duplicate it. It is totally random. It only happens right after I put it in gear and am idling. I initially thought it was a spun prop but put another one on and same thing, sent my original one out to be checked and it came back no issue. Had the prop shaft replaced but it did it before and still after. Prop shaft was not bad, did it more for proactive measures. Does not happen out of the whole.

My thoughts are possibly the gears that engage when I put the motor in gear? No idea how that process works but it's a guess. Any idea's?

A model nuber would help PER RULE #1. Only a FEW model numbers and all have different settings.

    Serial number is as follows:

    05086771

    Also, it's an 04, not 05...

    </td></tr></table>

It's an '05 according to the model number.

A loose prop or an out of true prop may be the cause of the noise. Without much forward thrust at dead idle, the propshaft and driveshaft can move up and down or in and out making a clunking or rattling noise. If it goes away at just above idle speeds, then that is the problem.

You can grab the prop and move it back and forth rapidly - normal propshaft freeplay - and make the noise.

Do you have the correct thrust washer on for the prop? If you are running a Renegade the thrust washer is different than the one for a Raker. Is your shifting fine? Has the water pump been changed lately? If so was the shift rod height checked? Does it seem to want to jump out of gear?

It's the original thrust washer and nut to my recollection. I will check. Definitely running a Renegade. When you say shifting, I assume from N to F/R...yes, it's fine, a little grinding noise but nothing I think out of the ordinary...Shift rod height...hmmm...no idea...Water pump was changed 6 months ago...

Did the problem start soon after that?
