Other than the gear case, is the difference just the mapping?

or how close (in HP) is the 250 HO to the 300?

The 250HO is a 3-star ultra low emission engine, the 300 is 2-star - they are not identical. For 2011 the 250HO and 300 will have the same M2 gearcase.

If money does not matter get the 300. You can reduce the oil consumption if you want and set it to the XD-100 setting. THe 250HO cannot be reduced. We ran a 300 for 120 hours in 2009 and it was a fantastic, high torque engine. Only available in white though.

prolly 275 ish give or take. usually the ho adds about 10 percent on top of rating because not all motors are teh same....

Add about 15% to the 250.

seahorse, I have a 250 ho 2010 with the lighting gearcase. Will the new gearcase
in the 250 ho have that round profile as the conventional LU ? Can I use that new
gearcase at the same height as the older one?

It's not a new gearcase, just new to the HO series. It's the M2 case used for years on the offshore series of motors. It has holes in the bullet for water pickup as well as the plastic screens on the side. It will be trial and error on the height.

250HO = 294 HP 300Etec Not sure but I would bet its not much more then 300!

Since that now the only difference will be the power, it didn't worth a while buying the 250 except for the color ( the 300 comes just in white). I always bought the ho line mainly because the noseconed lu ( have had 6 since the rude ram) but i'm certain the " round" gearcase will drop the performance in higher speeds.
