    2000 ficht

Tryed to start the boat this afternoon and nothing. No crank no start. Replaced ingition and kill switch no change. I did notice the low oil, hot, and check engine lights stay on. Any help would be great.
    Thanks

Could be the neutral safety switch in the remote control, the start delay relay or the start selenoid.

I'll check the shifter in a little bit. It may be that b/c I don't hear the relays clicking. I was able to get the engine to turn over by jumping the solonid.

when those 3 lights stay on- that means the EMM is bad.

Took the words right out of my mouth Seahorse, had the same thing happen on my old 2000 ficht and it was the EMM.

Assuming the emm is the main computer on the back of the motor. And sounds like a costly part too.

yes they are HI but you can send it to dfi and its usually half what a new one cost to have it fixed.Seems like from what I've read on here they are hard to get to answer the phone when ya call as they stay busy, and I believe I read they are closed on mondays.I've also read of getting em fixed from $450 to around $800 and new is twice that.Don't know if you could buy a good used one and have it programed for your specific motor or not but that could be a cheaper way of going

    Here is their info.

    http://www.dfitechnologies.com/contact.html

I just sent in my 2001 Ficht's EMM 2 weeks ago. Hope to get it back soon. Cost is $689 plus s/h. This is the 2nd EMM in 3 years. EMMs are the curse of the Ficht's.

    Re: 2000 ficht (Itch-2-Fish)

I would like to know if you can have a different emm programed for your motor, say from another same year type size, to possible have for a backup, seems like they go bad on these motors and if they don't quit but cause a lean condition it would do loads more damage money wise, Seahorse ,{THE} Championman, you guys would know this.what ya say? .......Mine so far so good with over 300 hours or if it was gonna pop[emm] would it already ??

    Re: 2000 ficht (rude power)

1999 225 ficht, I went to start my boat today and it turns over but no spark. Weird that it broke just sitting in the slip?! The same thing happened about 300 hrs ago in 2006 and it was the ecu/emm which had a "bad charge cap".

DFI rebuilt it in 2006 but boy 300 hrs later and bad again kinda makes me cranky, if that is what it is... DFI charged $689.95 to replace the "charge cap" the last time...are these things made out of GOLD or what?

    Re: 2000 ficht (JRM)

a back up would be nice since when they quit you are dead in the water. I was lucky today with it sitting in the slip. It would really make for a long day to be 40 miles off shore and have this motor crap out. Although practically I don't know if I could change it out w/ a spare hanging off the back of the motor in the swell...

    Re: 2000 ficht (rude power)

I don't know about using another EMM from a different year, model, etc.

If you really are interested in considering a backup, I would recommend periodically checking ebay for EMMs. There are used ones that may eventually come from your year model that you could buy and send in as the core.

But again, give DFI a call. The last couple times I was able to reach Chet and he was more than willing to answer all my questions. Each call was probably over 10 mins and he didn't rush me. I guess for $689 plus at least they're willing to listen and pay for the call.

When I asked my million questions, Chet answered that some of the original components go bad over time, especially for me in S. Florida, the heating and cooling during the course of the day over time. Especially under a boat cover during the peak of summer year after year. I understand your situation about having to change out another EMM relatively soon. I'm on my 2nd EMM with only 364 hours.

I decided to change it out again because $689 was still cheaper than financing a brand new outboard for $9000 +. I don't think I will ever get rid of that feeling of insecurity out of me... when will it fail me again? The first time I just cleared the inlet, fortunately I was able to get a tow back in.

Again, EMMs are the curse of the Ficht. Love em or hate 'em.

Is the emm and the ecu the same part?

The ECU is air cooled, the EMM is water cooled.

I always wonder why some people called the computer ECU or EMM...learn something new every day

An accurate answer would be that an ECU can be either air cooled (1997-1998) or watercooled (1999) on a FICHT. The EMM came out on the 2000 models when they were redesigned and called FICHT Ram.

An EMM contains the ignition system, fuel injector system, and the engine's complete charging system inside one unit, unlike an ECU which has external modules for one or more of the motor's systems.

I stand corrected, knew the 1999 was one of a kind but didn't realize it was water cooled.
